Well, I'm still happy you're here and I really learn a lot from your
responses.
PS: Thanks for the Critical Update cds that you sent me.

Seconded! We disagree on various things (such as 98lite, and _possibly_ the
intentions of Mr. soporific), but as Buffalo said, I learn a lot from what
you say.

Just so you understand, I have no negative opinion of Soporific or his
intentions. I just think he's chasing an impossible dream. And, if you'll
note, my objection was to anyone recommending such an updater to novices,
average users, etc., without adding appropriate caveats and hints that will
keep the unaware from having to flatten their system when it ends up a total
mess due to some unforeseen incompatibility.

As for me, someone who COULD use such a collection of updates, hotfixes,
etc., no way am I going to trust anyone else to just install a whole bunch
of them, good mixed with possibly bad, with no individual uninstall
available, etc. I pretty much HAVE to trust MS and it's patches, but that
does not extend to anyone else's stuff.

As for 98Lite... That is no longer really Windows 98, as I've already said,
several times. It's a super-modified, and like super-modified race cars,
even ones that are made street-legal, it is no longer an OS for the average
user. You wouldn't be able to take a super-modified Ford to the shop and
expect the average mechanic to work on it properly, nor would you let just
anyone drive it. And that is my objection to anyone recommending it in these
groups. If they want to support 98Lite, I suggest an entirely new newsgroup.

Having played with his product a bit, I am inclined to agree - though I am
very impressed with how it's all put together and presented. I do have an
old laptop I'm going to redo from scratch, which I will try it on: my
experiences so far have been with trying to salvage a system, which is
always more problematical.

Ah, sorry, my above paragraph was mainly referring to his UBCD project,
which is a complete '98 system install, _including_ assorted patches (the
universal USB was particularly attractive). I'd forgotten we started this
discussing his AutoPatcher. Yes, I tend to agree ...

Yes, it's the having to trust such patches that has kept me from installing
most of them - the lack of a viable reversion (other than backing up the
entire Windows partition every time which is not really practicable. Though
I'm toying with the idea of backing up just the Windows _directory_, which
just about might be).

Hmm. I know what you mean, but I've only ever experimented with the free
version, which doesn't have _lots_ of options, and I've always more or less
only done two things with it: removed IE, and gone back to the '95 shell -
both of which I feel make for a more robust (and certainly faster) system.
But I do know what you mean.

I fear there's insufficient interest - I'm pretty certain even its
developers aren't (developing it), since they've got XP to play with (and -
I haven't looked lately - probably Vista). (Actually I must have a look and
see: they might make Vista into something I could live with, though I doubt
it!)

Quite the opposite!

Still the case.
