Post subject: win 98 stalling at startup due to explorer illegal operation
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win98>gen_discussion (more info?)

This has me stumped, I have not used WIN98 for years but am setting up
an old computer.

Whilst installing an ADSL modem (working fine on my laptop) it crashed
win98 during the install (surprise,surprise).

Upon restarting WIN98 after Windows welcome screen it stalls for a
while at the Blue screen of death then an error message appears

"Explorer

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut
down........(you know the rest)

Details
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER>EXE at
015f:0040lf3l

Now the problem is this. It is a borrowed computer so I can not simply
do a fresh install on windows.

I have extracted and replaced explorer.exe from a old win98se disc I
had. this has not fixed the problem.

I have gone to every registry refresh point via scanreg. This did not
fix the problem.

I have run scanreg/fix. this didn't fix the problem.

I have spent six hours searching for solutions on the net

I have approx 48hrs to fix this or I will have to buy another PC, which
i do not want to do for the 3 weeks it will be needed.

Any help appreciated

Reboot to DOS and in C:\Windows do
SCANREG /RESTORE
which will present a menu of (probably 5) earlier bootup dates.
You can try any or all of these in case it boots Win98 OK.

Other likely hints.
1. Run DOS SCANDISK or
1b. Boot Windows in Safe Mode and run Windows Scan Disk.
2. Boot DOS and
FDISK /MBR
to rewrite the boot sector.
3. REName to something else AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
which Win98 does not require to start up.
4. Get an instal floppy correct for your version of Win98 (free from
www.bootdisk.com) and keep it handy. You can run DOS utilities
from this flloppy and copy files when needed (e.g. a common
startup error in flaky systems is CANNOT FIND HIMEM.SYS so
you can copy a known good file to C:\Windows in case it helps.)

The system is likely crashing when attempting to discover the network
AND/OR due to failed network software installation. Make sure there are no
previously linked share folders, mapped network drives, etc, which might
have been part of an old network on the 98 computer. Also check to ensure
that there is not some "Always dial a connection" left from any previous
network.

For initial diagnostics use msinfo32, and use winipcfg or ipconfig to
obtain the initial networking addresses/setup, and check Control Panel >
Network for any old settings. And check IE settings for connection, proxy,
etc..

You likely setup the ADSL modem in XP or Vista or will need to.

IF PREVIOUSLY SETUP, try to obtain the addressing for the modem/router from
the old/XP/VISTA system to which it was connected and transfer that
addressing to the 98 box settings in Networking. That's possibly TCP/IP,
DNS, Gateway, WINS, or other required settings.
Also, any firewall MUST be setup to allow this network traffic, and that
any previous networking settings on the 98 box are COMPLETELY removed prior
to the new setup, or it will be looking for that old network.. Make sure
that the new 98 network has been configured, if necessary, in any Anti-Virus
and other like software.

IF possible, with the ADSL still connected to the original setup computer,
look at the entire setup via its [modem/router] interface software for IP
and subnet, etc., as these were/are setup by the ISP/DSL provider. These
TCP/IP settings [IP, DNS, DHCP, etc.] in 98 MUST match what are required by
your provider and its modem/router, and your 98 computer and its software
MUST be aware of that ISP network setup/requirements OR must be set to
receive dynamic allocation, and set to any possible required network group
and/or identification..

IF the ADSL was NOT previously setup and has no 98 software support, then
you will likely need use an XP or VISTA box to set it up, then transfer
those settings to the 98 computer if necessary.

1. Boot into Safe Mode.
2. Remove the ADSL setup software that you previously installed.
3. Remove everything in the Control Panel>Network applet
3. Reboot

Does that get you back into Windows?

You do not set up an ADSL modem for each computer. Is this *only* a modem
(one phone cord, one LAN cable, one power cord, that's all) or is it also a
router. What make/model modem?

What version of Windows 98? Original flavor or Second Edition?

I think Don's suggestion of simply restoring the prior registry backup would
be simpler though, right?

OR you could do this list below, and then restore the prior registry backup,
to have an even cleaner system, I expect.

Except, having tried all the Registry backups, I suspect that all the OP is
left with is the backup that got made AFTER things hit the fan. When you
restore a Registry using Scanreg /Restore, it wipes out the oldest backup to
make room for the backup it does before restoring a backup. Do that five
times and all you have left are five copies of the original Registry that
existed before any attempts to restore got started.

My other main point was to get rid of the entire Network schmear,
specifically so that any mistaken configuration that might be causing the
BSOD will, with any luck, gets nullified.

That may be true. He may not even have any, but if it just happened, he
likely might.

Yup.

Which is why I sometimes save (copy) the RB backups to another folder - for
precisely that reason. Smile

Thought about it again, and it's unlikely that a backup was made AFTER the
screw-up. So, the OP simply has various backups, but who knows which is
which, now. In any case, the first thing I read from the OP is that she'd
tried all the Registry backups with no luck.
