Post subject: ME start up problems
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsme>systemtools (more info?)

When I booted up, all the icons were supper large, and getting onto any web
site but home page was impossible--system freezes up. I booted in safe mode
and ran Spybot, Webroot, and Norton.. none of which did anything. I did reach
a website which offered a scan and fix of computer problems- scan indicated
over 100 problems, but I don't know if the purchase of the fixes will really
solve anything.
I also did system restore to last previous restore point, but the feedback
said nothing had been changed. I got some msgs about problems with kb891711
and 18547. Removed 891711 but nothing changed. Anyone help??

Sounds like your Video Drivers may be corrupted - presumably, the screen
size has shrunk to 640 x 480 and 16 or 256 colours (just like Safe Mode)

If so, and you can't resolve it by adjusting the screen properties
settings - and the fact that SR didn't resolve it, suggests this to be the
case. Try re-installing the drivers as follows :-

Firstly, confirm that you still have a copy of the Video Drivers supplied
with your PC - perhaps on a separate CD. If not, you'll need to install the
latest WinMe driver for your Video Card (Adapter) so you'll need to know
it's make and model number. If that's a problem, try Belarc Advisor from :-
http://belarc.com/free_download.html
which should help you identify it. Or go to the manufactures web site and
download the latest WinMe compatible driver for your specific card.

Boot into Safe Mode (Ctrl or F8 key during boot-up) and in Device Manager,
'Remove' any/all Display Adapters and Monitors, then re-boot. WinMe *should*
re-detect (Plug n' Play) your video card and then should ask you to confirm,
or point to the 'correct' driver. Point it to wherever you have put
downloaded drivers, where it should recognise and continue to install them.

Good luck

Mart
