Post subject: I need to save pictures received in email... Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>inetexplorer>ie6_outlookexpress (more info?)
Hi,
In Outlook Express 6, I created a sub-folder named "Pics" where I save all
the email with pictures that I have received. I now need to save those
pictures to a USB drive. On the Menu bar I clicked Tools, Options,
Maintenance and selected the Store Folder button to see where Outlook Express
saved the emails and files. I went to that location and found the "Pics"
folder (it read "Pics.dbx"). Unfortunately I couldn't open that folder to
access the pictures because as far as I can see .dbx files can only be opened
in the email program.
Other than opening each individual email and saving the pictures one-by-one
to my USB drive, is there a simpler way to do this?

The dbx files are data files and meant to be opened with OE. The best thing
you can do is to create a folder on your HDD, (in My Documents, perhaps),
and when you want to save a picture in an e-mail, Right Click on it and Save
Picture As and save it to this folder. Any or all of the pictures can be
dragged from the folder to the flash drive in one shot.

Thanks for replying, Bruce. What I'm wondering, though, is if there is a way
to retrieve the hundred-plus pictures I already saved in OE?

I know it is a bit of work, but can't you open the Pics folder and start
Right clicking and saving the pictures to a Windows folder?
If you want to spend the money, you could get this program.
There is not much you can do with the pictures as long as they are in OE.

mccdaddy,
If the messages are already in a folder, and you don't need to save the text
part of the messages, after creating a folder to save them to, try the
following:
1. Click on and highlight about 100 messages at a time, in that folder. Make
sure that they show a paperclip, in the message header, preview pane.
2. With the messages highlighted, Select on the toolbar Messages> Combine
and Decode> All the photos will be on an attachment line.
a. You may run into a problem with attachments form AOL users, or is
imbedded in the message, it might be necessary to save those attachments,
one by one. They usually don't cause a paperclip to be displayed in the
header preview pane.
3. Highlight all the image files on the new message> Right click on of the
Highlighted files> Save All> Browse to the folder that you intend them to.
Once you save the attachments you can now delete the combined message, but
don't delete the originals.
4. Select the next 100 messages, and repeat steps 2 & 3, until all
attachments are saved.

You've not saved the pix, you've only archived the emails _containing the
pix_ (be the pix attached or embedded).
