I'd just typed out a solution and was about to hit the Send button when I
spotted the two magic letters (xp). Thanks Mike, for picking it up and
furnishing the xp solution.

Addendum.
Look for a folder named I386 which might either be in the root of C:\, in
C:\Windows or even in another partition. When located note its location
and then either from a command prompt or in the Start | Run box type
expand [path]I386\RUNDLL32.EX_ C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe
and then click enter/return
replacing [path] by C:\ if I386 is located at C:\I386 or the path to I386
if located elsewhere.

Been there, done that, have lots of tee-shirts!

I'm not so sure that what I posted is going to help if the poster only has
a recovery disk and if they deleted both copies of rundll32.exe. System
Restore would help if the deletion was recent. The poster should also be
able to extract a new copy from the i386 folder if present on their PC.
