Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>inetexplorer>ie6_outlookexpress (more info?)

A couple of days ago my computer just stopped receiving and sending e-mails.
I found an article 196613 in help and support and it looks like it's exaclty
the problem I'm having, but I am unable to fix it. When I hit the
send/receive button all I get is your password was rejected, etc. Then this
box pops up with my name and a password. If I say OK or just delete it it
just pops up again. What is going on here?

Thank you.

It didn't look like my computer sent you my reply to your post so I'm going
to send it again in case it didn't:

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was
rejected. Account: 'mail.charter.net', Server 'mail.charter.net', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response:'-ERR invalid user name or password.', Port 110, Secure
(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Socket error: 10061, Port:110, Protocol: POP. No connection could be made
because the target machine actively refused it.

The connection was rejected by incoming mail server "mail.charter.net",
please try again later.

Call Charter and have them check your account settings. They may wish to
reset your password.

Charter DID reset my password and it still wouldn't work. I can pull my mail
when I'm in their website but I can't pull it in OE.

The Invalid password error message can mean that any of the following
are wrong:
- POP3 server name
- Incoming Mail Server Account Name (some require the full e-mail
address user.RemoveThis@somewhere.com, others just want the user part)
- Incoming Mail Server Password (often case sensitive)
- Incorrect use of Secure Password Authentication (SPA) - few severs
use this
- Incorrect use of SSL - few servers use this, but it's becoming more
common
- The mail server is having temporary problems
- Anti-Virus scanning e-mail or anti-spam program interfering with the
mail server logon
Check these settings in Outlook Express at Tools, Accounts, Mail,
Properties, Servers (Advanced tab for SSL). Check with your mail
service (generally your ISP) for the correct values. If the values seem
correct, retype them and click APPLY. In the event that the account
settings are corrupted in the registry, it might be necessary to delete
the mail account, restart OE and then set up the account again. In some
cases it might be necessary to set up a new identity in OE and create
the mail account there.

I ended up creating a new account in OE. It worked. But I notice I can't
access all
my e-mail addresses. How do I recover them for my new identity? And I want
to delete the old identity but wonder if I'll be able to do it since it says
it's "password protected"-can't imagine what password I used. Probably
entered it a long time ago when I didn't know much about computers. (Know
much more now, but I'm self-taught...)

So are you saying that you can't get into your old identity now?

If you can, open the address book there. Then move all the contacts
from the Main Identity to the Shared Contacts. You'll then have access
to them in your new identity.

If you can't get into the old identity, then see
The Windows Address Book (WAB)
http://www.insideoe.com/files/wab.htm

This shows how to open the address book outside of OE and get access to
all contacts.

As for deleting the old identity,
How do I delete an Identity if I forgot the password?
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#delnopass
