My IE6 quit working a while back. Actually, it'll open up when I launch it,
but it launches two windows and neither one will work, they just keep
refreshing every few minutes.
My WindowsUpdate won't work either, since it uses IE as a conduit. I
installed Firefox to access the web, but I can't update Windows with
Firefox. Then I tried to download and install IE7 to see if that would
work, but it wouldn't install, said I need IE6?? I tried downloading IE6
updates, but when I try to install them, it says I don't have Admin Rights,
even though I'm logged on as Administrator.
I tried deleting History and Temp files in IE6. I tried adding "Everyone"
in the registry and giving full Admin Rights. Nothing seems to work to get
IE6, IE7 or WindowsUpdate to work.
Btw, I'm running WinXP Home SP2 (Build 2600, Ver. 5.1). I'm also running
OE6, sp2, and it works just fine. Firefox crashes everytime I open it for
the first time, but subsequent openings run fine. IE6 remains
non-functional. Even its icon on the Start Menu is gone, although it
remains in the QuickLaunch.
Any ideas? Can I download a standalone IE7 to try to install?

Click "Start", "Run", type or paste the following line into the "Open"
box and click "OK". Then select "Repair Internet Explorer" and
click "OK". Please note that the command is case-sensitive.

Tried it, pasted the command and got a RUNDLL error saying "Error loading
SETUPWBV" "The specified module could not be found."

You will only have that module if you installed IE6sp1 in XP base.
You could probably extract it from a download of IE6sp1 but I don't
know if you would have all the other setup that would be present
when using it normally.
The main effect of it is to reregister a bunch of .dll during the boot it forces.
An alternative is to run the following command file, provided courtesy of
MVP Kai Schaetzl:
Download it and execute it. Since it is based on the old IE Repair
which used to be done during a boot when *nothing* else is running
I usually suggest as well that it might be a good idea to do it during
a safe boot when at least *less* is running. ; )
Note for IE7 lurkers: there are known incompatibilies if you re-register
IE6 modules such as shdocvw.dll while it IE7 is still installed.

Thanks, that seems to have worked. At least enough to let me download and
install ie7. Will see how that works.

Update: IE7 seems to be working good so far. Thanks for your help Robert.

Ok. Thanks for the feedback.
BTW now that you are on IE7 you should post any further questions
or comments about it to IE General. IE6 Setup is really a backwater
newsgroup anyway. ; ) Cross-posting for convenience.
