Post subject: Dos program now starts before win 95 opens.
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win95>msdosapps (more info?)

Win 95 desktop that used to load windows. Then to run the dos program,
selecting the shortcut exited win 95 and ran the dos application in dos mode.

Problem is, the desktop now loads win 95, but just after the Win 95 screen
comes up the dos program always launches it self and I can't get into win 95
at all?

Any ideas why this has happened and how can I get it back to launching Win
96 first?
Also, once I get win 95 running again, how do I run the Dos program in it's
own window without exiting Win 95 and running Dos?

Any help gratefully received.

Try starting the computer in Safe mode by tapping the F8 key during bootup.
Also, msconfig will show you what is running at startup and typically works
on Windows 95.

a look in msconfig.

Started in safe mode. No msconfig. Have downloaded a copy of msconfig to my
other pc but can't load into win 95 pc due to no cdrom drivers while in safe
mode.

Try tapping the F8 key and selecting "Step by step confirmation". If you can
bypass the startup programs, you may be able to start Windows normally
with CD ROM support.

Ben,

Ran msconfig - an got following..

"STARTUP"
MSN251 R:win95\msn251.exe/q/r:n
SYSTEM TRAY Systray.exe
BROSWERWEBCHECK loadwc.exe
ZBROWSER LAUNCHER c:\programfiles\logitech\itouch\itouch.exe
EM_EXEC c:\program~1\logitech\mousew~1\system\EM_EXEC.EXE
WINZIP QUICK PICK c:\program~1\winzip\wzqkpick.exe

"CONFIG.SYS"
DOS=single
FILESHIGH=100
BUFFERSHIGH=50
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICE= c:\windows\himem.sys *
DEVICE= c:\windows\emm386.exe

"AUOTEXEC.BAT"
@ ECHO OFF
SET TMP= c:\windows\temp *
SET TEMP= c:\windows\temp *
REM
REM The following lines have been created by windows. Do not modify them.
REM
C:
CD c:\euroco~1\eposcd~1\vms.exe
CALL c:\euroco~1\eposcd~1\vms.exe
c:\windows\win.com/wx

All of the lines with * next to them have the windows logo in front of the
corresponding line. ????

VMS.EXE is the dos program.

The instruction CALL on penultimate line in AUTOEXEC.BAT, I thought might
have been the problem, so I unchecked it ran the PC, but no change, so have
changed it back.

Run msconfig, uncheck "dos=single" in config.sys and also the following
lines in autoexec.bat.

C:
CD c:\euroco~1\eposcd~1\vms.exe
CALL c:\euroco~1\eposcd~1\vms.exe
c:\windows\win.com/wx

To try and run the DOS program in a DOS box, find the "vms.exe" file in
"My Computer" or "Windows Explorer", right-click, select "Properties",
"Program", "Advanced" and make sure "MS-DOS mode" is unchecked.
If it isn't, uncheck it, click "OK", then "OK" again.

Ben,

Tried everything you suggested, with no luck. It just kept rebooting and not
doing anything. Occasionally coming up with an NDIS error.

I ran msconfig again and unchecked config.sys and autoexec.bat rebooted and
pc went back to it's former state, where it would load into win95 and run the
dos program when selected by exiting windows. Unchecking "MSdos mode" didn't
work either. I kept getting the error "not enough file handles to run VMS".
This was a problem I had with first installation of the dos program. I had to
change the config.sys and autoexec.bat files to:

Config.sys
fileshigh=100
buffershigh=50
dos=high,umb

Autoexec.bat
Set tmp= c:windows\temp
set temp= c:windows\temp

So I wondered why the problem had occurred and checked out the config and
autoexec files. They had been changed, which explained why unchecking them
allowed me to run the pc as it ran previously. However, the config.sys file
had been changed to:

Rem
Rem
Rem These files have been created by windows. Do not modify them
Rem
Rem

The config.sys file had been renamed config.tsh

The properties in the dos program however were still:

Config.sys
fileshigh=100
buffershigh=50
dos=high,umb

Autoexec.bat
Set tmp= c:windows\temp
set temp= c:windows\temp

So I was a bit confused, nevertheless it was working and I had to get it
back to the owner, a vet, asap, so didn't try to do anything else to it.

It appears that somebody at the vets must have been messing about with it,
but of course, nobody would admit to it.

They have asked me to have another look at it in the new year, to try and
get the dos program to work in it's own window, but having tried what you
suggested, it looks as though that isn't possible.

Many thanks for your help (so far).

Kevin
