I decided to give Sygate Firewall a try. Zone Alarm was uninstalled,
registry cleaned up to remove the usual suspects and Sygate installed.
Each time I logged in an error message from MSofts error reporting
routine told me that Sygate needed to close. Several install/uninstall
tries made but no good.
Decided to go back to Zone Alarm but it will not install. Early on in
the install routine the following Zone Alarm generated error message
appears:
Zonealarm-1230-english has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I searched the registry for any remaining refs to Sygate or Zone Alarm
but could not find any.
Anyone got any ideas please?

If you're using XP why not try System Restore? How did you "clean" the
registry?
