I have problem with Wimpy FLV Player: and it does not work on Windows 98. I
tried also previous version of that player (2.5) -same result, plus player
cause windows system error. Player developers were too lazy even to specify
system requirements for they "industry leading cross platform (Mac and PC)
standalone Flash Video FLV player". It works on windows XP, but when mouse
over on player window, it show annoying white Play/Stop icon on center of
window, that's really annoying. Any ideas what is wrong there?

Your complaint appears to be that proprietors of this software
chose to program it for some operating systems (e.g. WinXP)
and not others (Win98.) Do they not mark this clearly on the box?

No, they not marked system requirements, even minimal. Just sentence
"Wimpy's industry leading cross platform (Mac and PC) standalone Flash Video
FLV player"

IIRC, you have to have the flash plug-in installed, but if you
use a common browser you may already have it. I use Opera and I
/think/ I had to install it, the file name is:

flashplayer7_winax.exe

but a later version should work as well. The player adds two win
sys files and about 250 registry lines (probably totally
unnecessary but that's Windows).

Riva is a 2.5 MB exe, and it does require an install, but it is
relatively benign.

Aside from about 15 lines of

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uni
nstall\

etc. stuff, it only adds this:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Flash Video File
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Flash Video File\Shell\Open\Command
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Flash Video File\DefaultIcon
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.flv\ @=Flash Video File (was flv_auto_file)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Flash Video File\ @=Flash Video File (was
<null>)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Flash Video File\Shell\Open\Command\
@="C:\Program Files\Riva FLV Player\Riva FLV Player.exe" "%1"
(was <null>)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Flash Video File\DefaultIcon\ @=C:\Program
Files\Riva FLV Player\Riva FLV Player.exe,0 (was <null>)

and about 3 files in its own directory.

I think RIVA tells you what it needs if you don't have it.

You MAY have to have Swiff player installed too, I can't
remember. Either way, it's quite painless and does not mess with
your system. Both Swiff and flashplayer7 are about 600KB.

As far as "portable stuff", I only ever touch this stuff at a
desk, so I can't help you there. But seeing as the sizes of
everything involved are fairly small by today's standards I
don't see it not fitting on even the smallest USB stick. I do
not believe just having all this on a CD-ROM will make ANY
machine play FLV's but then again it could. It would take you
about 10 minutes to find out. And if it doesn't I can't see
anyone objecting to installing a few harmless files on whatever
computer. In fact you could probably put together an install
package of under 4 MB for all this stuff if you know how to
write a batch file or want to use an installer of some kind.

As I said, the latest VLC may well do all this and more (I DO
use it and like it a lot) but whatever version does may or may
not run on 98. I am not really into YooToob etc., so I am not
very up to date on this stuff.

There's a rather hairy thing called "SUPER" which plays
/EVERYTHING/ I believe, but as I said, it is a little hairy. And
almost 30 MB. I like small programs myself.

Of course, it is no easy matter to be polite; in so far, I mean,
as it requires us to show great respect for everybody, whereas
most people deserve none at all; and again in so far as it
demands that we should feign the most lively interest in people,
when we must be very glad that we have nothing to do with them.
