Using a netgear WG111 windows 98 won't connect

I could not find a firewall. I am not sure if I am using one. I
don't remeber setting one up

I disabled norton antivirus auto protect

I removed all the dial up connections

I was able to ping another computer on the network.
after 3 time outs.

packets sent 4 packets received 1 packets lost 3

It gave me the message unknown host.

Cynthia, even though you disabled Norton, it is not really disabled. If what
you have is the Internet suite, then you have a firewall.

Your ping failures for the local network indicate interference, likely by
Norton. I happen to be one who dislikes Norton, but IF you have a paid
subscription, first retrieve your registration numbers and KEY. Check on
Norton/Symantec web site as different versions have different retrieval
techniques.. Also pickup the cleanup tool while your there.
After obtaining those and saving them {if you want to re-install} UNINSTALL
Norton [don't use the Internet without protection], and then try the local
pings again after a restart and post the results.

What did winipcfg show?
