I am trying to get an old DOS package to work on a new machine. (It's old
tax prep software that I still need as a tax accountant.)

Both old and new computers are Windows 98.

All of the old software is in one DOS directory.

I copied the complete directory from the old machine to the new machine.

When I go to launch it on the new computer, I get to a splash screen, but
when I try to move further the software crashes that the following message
appears:

"CANNOT CREATE GOBAT??.BAT IN
nMakeAndWriteBatch 98"

Any ideas where to look to try to get the new program operating on the new
machine? It is still working quite well on the old machine.

Thanks

Charles

Look in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the old machine and see if some special
settings are required, such as PATH and SET statements. A DOS application
often relies on these and other settings for its proper operation.

Yeah--I already thought of that. I have copied all the CONFIG.SYS AND
the Autoexec.bat into the new computer and re-booted but to no avail.

Charles

PS It is really important to me to get this working--where would I find
the right expertise? The company that made the original tax software
is long gone.

Check that any folders referred to in CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT actually
exist.

For what it's worth, I solved the problem. When the files were backed
up to the CD ROM and then copied, they all became read only.

Just used the ATTRIB command and everything started to work!

Well done!. That is probably the most common reason for a 'Cannot
create...." error and I'm embarrassed that I didn't think of it.
