Post subject: manual edits for Registry Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsnt>registry (more info?)
Hi All,
I'd like to write my own program to manually edit the Registry to configure a
computer with my personal preferences. Typically, it takes me 15-30 minutes to
configure the settings in Windows manually.
For example, I'd like to set the Keyboard delay to zero.....
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard
KeyboardDelay, REG_SZ, 0
....and set the mouse cursors to animated defaults...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Cursors
AppStarting, REG_EXPAND_SZ, %SYSTEMROOT%\Cursors\appstart.ani
Wait, REG_EXPAND_SZ, %SYSTEMROOT%\Cursors\hourglas.ani
....and set the Performance Options to a custom selection of items like Smooth
Fonts, Show Contents While Dragging, and Show Common Tasks...
....and set Windows System Failure to not Automatically Restart...
....and set the Start Menu for Number of Programs on Start Menu = 0, not Open
Submenus, not Highligh newly installed programs, etc.
Is there any document out there which details the corresponding Registry keys
for Windows environment settings such as these?
with that page i think you could change just about anything.
in view of the large # of changes that you wich to make, i would suggest that you back up the entire registry to a dvd or something.
i would also highly suggest you do the following before you start.
TO INCREASE THE # OF REGISTRY BACKUPS OPEN C:WINDOWSSCANREG.INI AND INCREASED THE DEFAULT 3 FROM 5 TO 88 THE MAXIMUM IS 99 BY CHANGING THE 5 TO 88 IN THIS LINE:
MaxBackupCopies=88
thus if you don't like what you just did you can go back and pick #5 or #80.
normally when you go to restore you can only see 5.
warning if you use fixexe.com this will reset the registry back ups to 5 again.
you might want to make 1 change at a time. and save each reg line before and after each change.
you might want to go to this website and download and install editreg.reg this makes it possible for you to see the registry change before you add it. you just highlite the .reg file right click on it and select edit and you will see every thing .

call JOHN WILEY & SONS
@ 1-(800) 225-5945 AND REQUEST windows 98 secrets book by BRIAN LIVINGSTON & DAVIS STRAUB. I PAID $49.99 mine --well worth it!!!!!!
then just look under registry and it tells you how to change the background color screen font etc. i think there is a windows secret book for each version of windows.
page 859 states that the appearance values are stored
HKEY_CURRENT_USERCONTROL PanelAppearanceSchemes
the windows 98 secrets book comes with a cd rom and on the cd rom is a color. reg that you can practice editing the colors with. just save your current setting first as my scheme or name of your chosing.
you might want to take out a tablet or binder and write down each change as you make them in display. write down the colors, the steps. diagram out the windows--inactive, active ,3d object etc. and list the color by it.
write your items down and font, item size, color rbc#. what scheme name you are saving it under. this makes it a snap to reset up a desktop from scratch.
now for the warning. the registry is the brains of windows. if you are brain dead you won't run and neither will windows. so be careful back up everything first. make 1 change at a time. back up the 1 line that you want to change before and after. ya! that's right if you save the line you change then you can put that line back in. read everything you can get on the registry before you make any changes.
best of luck to you!

ps: please let me know if this helps and how it goes!

HI!!!!!!
i have heard absolutely nothing from you did you try any of this?
you know it's really simple just go in and set up your desktop appearance effects wall paper, fonts and size etc. and your mouse and any accessibilities. get everything the way you want it save your appearance settings by giving it a scheme name. then you can go to:
start
run
type in regedit
HKEY_CURRENT_USERCONTROL Panel
click the plus sign next to control panel
highlight control panel
up at the top you click on registry
export registry file
save as my settings or my desktop.reg
see the other replies for more details and safe guards.
frankly i do not understand why anyone would post a question and then never come back to see what the answer is. are you still interested in persuing this question??????
