Post subject: How do I make W2K fiind I386 on the hard drive? Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win2000>group_policy (more info?)
Hi all:
I think this is a policy, correct me if I am wrong.
I have service pack 4 slipped into a Win2k install cd.
I installed win2k.
I copied the i386 folder to the local drive.
where is it that I configure windows so that anything that needs the system
cd
goes to c:\i386 instead of the physical cd?

I have not verified this my self but see the KB link below and paste I took from it
that indicates how to do this for Windows File Protection which may do what you
ant. --- Steve
NOTE: The Windows 2000 source files location information is stored in the following
registry location and can be modified to point to the drive letter of a volume that
has an I386 flat folder of the installation files or change the SourcePath value in
the registry to point to a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path instead of a mapped
network drive.
The SourcePath value is located in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
Example:
If the I386 directory is at C:\I386, the SourcePath value would be C:\.
If the I386 directory is at \\Servera\w2kflat\I386, the SourcePath value would be
\\Servera\W2kFiles.
After you restart the computer, WFP and SFC /SCANNOW uses the new source path instead
of prompting for the Windows 2000 installation CD-ROM.

The registry entry is correct as is the path....
We use it all the time. You can simply install from the CD and then, after
the fact, create a folder called SYSTEM and then copy the I386 folder inside
that. You would now have c:\system\i386. You would simply enter c:\system
as the source path.

Cary
