Post subject: ME major problem. I'm COMATOSE. Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsme>general (more info?)
I am trying to fix a peoplepc IBM based computer for a
friend. I seriously suspect this computer is virus laden.
I was told it was slowing and hanging before it was
brought to me.
At first boot, I could not get past the loader 'dots'.
I tried the F11 command to start the computer to the
partitioned clean drive. I then selected the fdisk
choice to fdisk and reinstall all files. Probably my
first mistake. The fdisk utility got to about 3 percent
and then warned me of stack issues.
I was told to restart as the fdisk action was halted. I
restarted.
Now I can't even get the computer past the IBM logo.
This computer has no boot disk, so getting to an A:/
prompt is not possible. Is this PC doomed? In permenant
coma?

You can download an ME boot floppy maker from <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.bootdisk.com" target="_blank">www.bootdisk.com</a>
It does, however sound as if the PC has more problems than a
reformat/reinstall is going to cure - possibly a failing HD.
Check what the make of the HD is, and download the disk tester from the
manufacturer's website - use that to boot the PC and see what it reports.
Also check out the RAM, using DocMemory2 from <a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.simmtester.com" target="_blank">www.simmtester.com</a> - again
from its own boot disk.
See what they say, and post back with the results.

I downloaded a ME bootable disk, but the computer tells
me it is not a valid system disk.

Did you run the download to create the disk (like you should have done) or
just copy it to a floppy?

You are helping me! I am still at the a prompt after
running through all of the diagnostics with no problems.
I would love to revive this poor PC!
I am at the ready and await your instructions.
Thanks Noel!
