Post subject: individual email messages will not open Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>inetexplorer>ie6_outlookexpress (more info?)
I have three email accounts for which I use Outlook express. I am able to
send and receive just fine, however all of a sudden I cannot open any old or
new emails. The hour glass forms and everthing just sits there. I am
running WinXP SP3 and until yesterday IE 7.0. I tryed rebooting and then one
email would open, but no more. Yesterday I installed IE 8.0 beta and notice
there is a link on that to open my email. I wonder if that has anything to
do with it. I have done nothing else and have never had this problem before.
Please advise

You installed a non-proven beta IE8 program and /then/ this started? My
first impression is to get rid of IE8 Beta and wait until it is RTM.

Installing IE8 Beta 2 should not be the cause of this behavior...and I
suspect that uninstalling it would not resolve it either.
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.
- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.
- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:
<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

I don't know why but unistalling IE 8 beta 2 did immediatley resolve the
problem-it may have something to do with the new button in IE 8 beta that
conects directly to ouotlook express by opening outlook express from IE 8
beta 2. Thank you

I suspect you had a horked install of IE8 Beta 2, probably due to the fact
that your anti-virus and/or anti-spyware application was running in the
background during the installation.
FWIW, I cannot reproduce the behavior here running IE8B2 in WinXP SP3.
