You don't already have a spare hard drive to test with? Sure get it.
What does MSD stand for? Why would you see more than one instance of
it?

Memory problems will cause odd behaviors like this, does the unit ever
die for no good reason?

Though it's possible the drive could be bad...even after passing the
diagnostics...chances are it's ok.

As far as error messages go, it would sure be helpful if you could list
the messages verbatim...

telling us you are getting "MSD" messages does not mean much.

One thing to also try is running a RAM test such as memtest86

if any errors are reported, you can stop the test at that point and
assume you have bad RAM

I do have a spare older drive. It just seems like a good idea to put a brand new
one in.

No, the desktop doesn't ever die for no good reason.

Okay. Is there a way to print screen in DOS when the error messages are displaying
during the bootup?

I do have memtest86, so I'll run it and report back here.

Well let memtest run for a while...
though it should run for at least an hour or more...
if you have serious ram problems, they will usually start showing up
pretty early on in the test...
if any problems are found you can stop the test ...as there should be no
problems at all

as to bootlog.txt

I think it also has come to mean the bad luck (or good luck?) that
magic etc. can attach to something. I think that one computer has it.

mojo noun, plural -jos, -joes.
1. the art or practice of casting magic spells; magic; voodoo.
2. an object, as an amulet or charm, that is believed to carry a
magic spell.
Origin:
1925–30, Americanism; cf. Gullah moco witchcraft, magic, prob. akin to
Fulani moco'o medicine man (c represents voiced palatal stop)
Dictionary.com Unabridged
Based on the Random House Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2009.

mo·jo (mo-'jo-') n. pl. mo·jos or mo·joes
1. A magic charm or spell.
2. An amulet, often a small flannel bag containing one or more
magic items, worn by adherents of hoodoo or voodoo.
3. Personal magnetism; charm.

[Perhaps ultimately from Fula moco'o, medicine man.]

I think in this context it refers to what computer technicians would know as
a certain presence or power in the ether that is typically controlled by
holding your mouth in the right shape while pressing a button or waiting for
something to happen (or not happen, as the case may be.)

MSD is a Microsoft utility used to examine the PC hardware arrangement and
Windows setup. It is fairly primitive compared to newer investigative
tools (and simply ignores some hardware, such as USB), but is adequate for
some preliminary troubleshooting steps.

Any W98 installation that is something like original will probably have MSD
installed, especially if it was upgraded from W95.

It is possible that the message appears repeatedly because the startup files
include a script that tries to invoke MSD, and then continues retrying if it
detects that MSD didn't start or exited illegally, or if the problem that
caused MSD to be invoked in the first place continues to apply (the script
loops).
