I question the need for portability and think it's more the case that
people don't know how to change the existing drive in their system or
don't know that they can. Most times they don't know that they should,
once their drives reach a certain age and failure becomes a real
possibility.
And I wouldn't sacrifice performance to get portability. You won't get
high performance with USB vs connecting an IDE or SATA drive directly to
your motherboard.

Hi,
Did you check out the specs for that hard drive? I am saying this because I
saw one on QVC. It was for 2000 and up. I have not seen one lately that you
can use with 98SE. So, before you buy an external drive, check out the
specs.
