Hmm, still a bug or two apparently..
I own a web hosting company so (yes we offer mostly Linux

to

Well, you wouldn't have to fear me for sure.. I've closed several email

| VPC 2007 is nice. The 2004 version is nice too though there are a bunch of

the

I'm

I'd

Perhaps the cycling will be gone, seems to be constantly under

as for the home use issues of VPC (and VMware): IMO, This will likely be
the only way for use of older OSs in the not so distant future, for people
who need to, and those that like to play around. Perhaps even for those
businesses that still need legacy support. At least that's how I see it,
with the board, processor, drive, and chipset changes anyway.

Thank you for your reply.
Have opened up driver download with win-zip and winrar got the same result a
mass of pages. With computer talk(x.,#) Normally you would get a few files
from the download and move them to c:\temp on your computer. Is this right?
Pen drive still will not work or recognize the driver download. I think I'm
being given the wrong driver I have a VGI 1GB 2.0 USB FLASH PEN DRIVE and
I'm being given driver for require WIN98 Driver for GXT PD1 Pen Drive both
are VGI PEN DRIVES have asked customer service if driver is for both Pen
drives, as yet no reply. Driver download is Name PD1-SK6201.RAR Type
winrar archive 3.5mb
From www.valgear.com
Will keep trying thanks again

What I see in that RAR file is a whole Setup program for the USB stick. You
extract the entire mess using WinRAR, to a new folder named PD1-SK6201.
There will be another folder with the same name nested inside that new
folder after you're done. Inside that folder is SETUP.EXE. You want to run
that. Now, whether or not that set of drivers will work for your product I
don't know. It's up to you to try it out.

I should add that I looked up *your* pen drive at various sales sites, and
everywhere the minimum specs say Win ME, 2000 or XP. Win98/98SE is not
supported. It may very well be that the only drivers for that device are
those that are included with the previously mentioned OSes and that you're
SOL when it comes to using it with Win98SE.

For those who do not yet have a pen drive,
and want to avoid Win 98 SE driver hassle,
I can recommend the Verbatim Store'N'Go.
Drivers for it are available on the Verbatim site.
There are actually a couple of different driver files
for the different Verbatim models,
so I wouldn't advise trying those drivers on another brand,
even though they MIGHT work. Or not.
It also installs in seconds, no external drivers required, in XP.
Comes with a lanyard, and a cover for the business end.
Fairly shock and water resistant.
I have the 1 GB model. I got mine at Office Max.
I'd recommend signing up for their special offers.
They don't Spam you, and they do send you
a "$10 off a $20 purchase" card every few months.
I used one card to get 100 DVD-R discs for $15,
and other to get the pen drive for the same $15,
but the price has since dropped, and you can get
the drive now for $18.88, without a discount card.

You remind me that I used to get Office Max special offers. Wonder what I
did to end that. Guess I'll check in with them again.

Please! Please! Please!
Stop hitting that Quote button. Having read someone's post once is sufficient.
Please.....use the Reply button and just type your response.
The problem isn't who or what will unpack the RAR file....the problem and topic of this thread is making a 1 gig flash drive work on a Windows 98/SE machine. Good Luck! I've got several different flash drives and cannot get any past my 256 meg to work on 98/SE.
USB support for 98/SE is very marginal. You may get drivers to work on your own PC and you may not. It's iffy all the way around.
Using some other means of copying files from the 98 machine would be my first choice. Like a DVD burner or hard drive in a removable drive bay.

They're going to yell at us for taking a topic and completely derailing
it... I may be an MVP but that only covers me a wee bit - it doesn't help
you. *grins* Anyhow, digression is my middle name. Find an MVP with "DTS" in
their signature (some hide) and you'll be able to ask them for confirmation
if you wish. They should have warned you ahead of time, eh? Anyhow... You
asked...
Interspersed as needed - no snipping - size likely huge.

Actually there are no bugs that I've found that have impacted me. I can't
claim the cycling of VNC or (and I wasn't sure where you were going) the
problems of Ubuntu were bugs as in the above case it was far too complex to
bother bug reporting in either case. It was using a virtual computer to run
an operating system on fake hardware that wasn't real in a system that was
powered by Windows and was using Linux. When I power up an Ubuntu box
without VNC it works like a champ.
My reasons for looking at it are the interface itself... I'd like to
consider offering it to clients along with CentOS. Right now I can't justify
the expense but I could dedicate a server and split it up for that - perhaps
something for learning on or perhaps a donation to the cause or what not
but - truly - I'm a Windows fan at heart.

For all the answers I seem to have it is really having just paid attention
and had a lot of questions. I'm still fairly young but I've been "online"
since before the Internet really existed and have been involved in computers
since an early age. I believe I was five or six when I got a Vic 20 and
later found an ad in the back of a Popular Mechanic for a PET which was
actually older and slower. (I think it only had 2 kb of RAM??? It's been a
lot of years and it was constructed in a wooden box but those were fun
days.)
I don't know anything about you nor what you want to accomplish with Linux.
I've been eyeballing Solaris a lot... *sigh* I don't know if I have the
time.
Anyhow...
RedHat is nice.
SUSE is wonderous.
FreeBSD is nice (that's Unix based.)
Mandriva is fantastic. (Used to be Mandrake.)
Ubuntu is on my list. (I'm still working with it but so far so good.)
Knoppix is pointless mostly but works.
Hmm...
Mandriva or Ubuntu seem to me to be the easiest to work with. Grabbing a
free copy of Virtual PC (and then working like heck to get it installed -
again that should go off-newsgroup) might get you started. An old PC is
nice.
Don't let the zealots for any OS fool you. I recommend, hands down,
Microsoft products because of their ease AND the ability to configure them
to suit your needs. You get freezes on Linux and you get security problems.
The reality is that security is up to you not the OS vendor and, well, there
are learning curves with all of them.
In reality they're all a lot alike. What you load for your desktop, gnome,
kde, etc... That matters more to most folks it seems. It won't matter - you
still can't carp a grep (but you can grep a carp) with any of 'em.
They're all basically point and click now. The desktop is what really
matters.

Err... I will try to not comment too much but frankly I get off topic to the
point of absurdity at times. I feel sorry because usenet groups have a topic
as does a thread and stomping on those (reasonable?) expectations is not a
nice thing for me to do. I've spent a long time online. I guess that I
probably spend about 16 hours a day in front of a PC, more most days and
then a 20 hour crash at the end of the week or the start of a new one. In
that time I have learned that it's nice to have a degree of understanding
(it doesn't have to be respect but understanding) of the views of other
people and some people are pretty touchy when a thread goes too far off
topic. As we've not had any complaints I shant worry yet. Should we have
complaints then you can bet that I will certainly admit to my error and stop
the chatter in the thread. This being 98 (the ME groups are similar) it
isn't really as much an issue as it is in some of the other Microsoft groups
and some of the other UseNet groups are even more anal about it.

I don't think it matters so much as having them available to hand when you
need them AND - this is more important - knowing where and how to find them
when you need them. I mentioned above that I've been online a long time and
over the years I've collected more pointless and uncategorized trash then is
rational. It wasn't until a few years ago that I managed to "perfect" my
filing system. Unfortunately there are still countless uncategorized files
that need to get files. Need a job?

Ah. Owning a hosting company also has its benefits. I can also (if wanted)
make an address that is sent straight to the bit bucket with nothing but a
few kb of packets being used and a null response sent and that would kill
the SPAM issue. I leave my email open because, believe it or not, I probably
get a dozen people or so a week who want to follow-up off the list. I dunno
why... Maybe they think I know stuff? Really? I've just broken everything so
many times that I've learned to fix some of it or how to troubleshoot
problems. I've enough credits to have (I am always going to be in school -
even at 33) declared a major a number of times but a Liberal Arts degree
will mean nothing more than what I have already. I have some certifications
but - honestly? Those are just rote memory in my opinion and passing them
wasn't a matter of knowing or doing but rather just learning the answers.

I noticed a bug that I will report tomorrow when I repeat it. If I repeat
it. I actually got floppy disk thrashing going on during boot with a second
virtual machine running. As there was no disk in the drive, the virtual
machine already set to boot to the HDD and OS installed, I can't explain it.
The archives are, frankly, one of the greatest sources of wealth on the
planet. They're wealth is in the knowledge. The difficulty is in getting the
golden egg from the goose in that finding specifics from the archives is
difficult at best and a religion akin to the black arts at worst. Prior to
searching - even with years of practice - it helps if one burns a few black
candles, sacrifices a chicken, and prays to the gods of UseNet. If you want
specific information then for every quote plan on three additional candles.
If you want it specific to your OS plan on sacrificing at least one
additional chicken. If you want it to be correct information then, honestly,
a first born is probably in your best interest.
Too long and murky to spell check so you get what you get...
