Post subject: disappearance of PTR records in reverse zone
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win2000>dns (more info?)

I have a DNS server hosting Win2k domain namespace. Upon every reboot, the
reverse zone completely disappears, and it is the primary zone for PTR
records. The whole zone completely vanishes and I have to rebuild. Although
it is simply 20 or so records I am trying to understand why the records
would simply disappear?......It is unclear if the systemn is pulling the
files off the server or if DNS is getting broken due to improper zone
delegation.

Thanks,
Altria

Zone Delegation? Can you elaborate on:

1.Exactly how you created the zone,
2. Is it delegated? If so, how was it delegated?
3. Is the zone AD integrated?
4. If delegated, what DNS addresses are the parent domain DCs using, and
what DNS addresses are the child domain DCs using in their IP properties?
5. If delegated, what replication scope is the parent zone set to and the
child zone set to?

Note: If the zone is AD integrated, and the zone was delegated from a parent
domain zone to a child zone that you also made the zone AD integrated, and
the AD replication scope of the parent and the zone you created are both set
to Forest Wide, then the second zone will either disappear (as you're
seeing) and/or it will create a duplicate zone issue within AD. If you do
have a duplicate zone, it may be looked at as a conflicting zone, which may
cause additional issues. The only way to find out if a dupe or conflicting
zone exists is to use ADSI Edit to look at the application partitions,
determine and delete the dupe/conflicting zone.

But then again, this is speculation since I'll need additional information.

Also, I noticed this after I hit SEND on my previous post. Your subject says
disappearance of PTR records in the zone, however your post indicates the
zone completely vanishes. Which is it? My previous post is based soley on
the zone vanishing.
