getting messge tried to start 10 times are there other programs working. I
don't know how to check programs running in the background. Can anyone help
with this issue?

Try running defrag in Safe Mode. Running in Safe Mode means that many
background programs won't have been started and therefore should minimise
the writing to the hard drive which is interfering with the defrag.

My mistake, I forgot I was in a Windows ME group. Still the article applies
to Windows ME with one small addendum -- You don't want to disable System
Restore items in MSCONFIG. What those specific items are, well I forget the
exact names. Maybe someone else can fill you in.

Mike M
I just got a chance to try your suggestion and it worked perfectly...thanks
so much. Since I'm not on the computer daily this was a great help as it is
so frustrating and so time consuming to find the answer to problems. I was
surprised to find out that Microsoft no longer supports ME. I guess that
shows how behind the times I am computerwise. It is great to know that there
are people out in cyperspace that can help. Again, your help is much
appreciated.

Running defrag in Safe Mode is normally all that is required.

Yeah, I just add a lot of info on cleanup, too. It's also useful for
cantankerous installs/uninstalls.

Hello:
In addition to Mike's suggestion to running Defrag in Safe Mode, there is a
freeware utility that accomplishes much the same thing by running Defrag (or
optionally Norton's or the Jkessel defrag utilities) and , again optionally,
Windows ScanDisk and Clean-up utilities as part of the Windows start-up
process. This has the same effect of running these utilities with less
writes to the hard drive and less interference with the running of these
utilities. Some people find this easier than booting to Safe Mode (which
always scrambles my Desktop icons).
