Post subject: Do I dare delete 'Oldrest' files ? Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsme>systemtools (more info?)
I use Windows Millenium, and I just got a message that I was 'low on memory'
on my C: drive, so I started a seach for where all the memory had gone, and
found that the 'Oldrest' folder had 11,3 Gb (yes, Gigabyte) data in it.
I read somewhere that I could use the 'Disk Cleanup' feature to Clean up in
the System Restore folders (I guess that 'System restore' and 'oldrest' are
the same thing, right?) But I got a little worried since it was such huge
ammount of data.
About a year ago I had a 'partial crash' where I had to 'restore startup
files to other location' or something like that. could this have any affect
on the oldrest files?
Is it 100% safe to delete the oldrest files? Could anything hapen to the
system or the programs if i run the cleanup?.

Yes.
Any oldrest folder you might have is because you only partly followed
instructions probably posted by either Noel Paton or myself to resolve
issues with system restore. I'm fairly certain that those instructions
would have finished with "and now delete the folder C:\OLDREST". So yes,
it is perfectly safe to delete this folder which has nothing now to do
with the operating system being as it is in all likelihood a renamed
C:\_RESTORE folder

No. It would hardly be in Microsoft's or their customer's best interests
if Microsoft were to have included a disk cleanup applet with Win Me that
when run damaged the system or their users files. Note however that Win
Me's disk cleanup applet, unlike that included as part of XP, only allows
you to reduce the space allocated to the archive and opens the GUI to
allow you to do this. XP's disk cleanup applet includes the option to
delete all except the most recent system restore checkpoint.

I'm very sorry for posting again, but being 'computer-stupid' and not so good
at english I want to be absolutely sure on what to do.
Is this the correct procedure?
1. Run the 'Disk Cleanup' program, and use it's 'Clean up in system restore
folders' feature.
2. Delete the entire c:\oldrest folder (and not only it's contence) using
'normal' file deleteing procedures, (click it once and press 'delete' key)

And also again, Win Me's Disk Cleanup applet has no "Clean up in system
restore folder" feature. Instead all it offers is the ability to set the
amount of space allocated to the restore archive.

Yes, use the Delete key just as you would for any other unwanted file or
folder.

Thanx. I did like you said and now have half my c: drive free. But now I have
a new question: Where does 'System restore' no save it's files? I can't find
neither a _RESTORE or an OLDREST file anywhere in my computer.

In the same place as it has always done, in the ARCHIVE and TEMP
sub-folders within the C:\_RESTORE folder.
I can't find neither a _RESTORE or an OLDREST file anywhere in

It would appear that you may not have Windows Explorer configured to view
hidden system files. Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files
and folders" and UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files".
As I mentioned previously, the OLDREST folder was one you created as part
of an earlier cleansing of a corrupt system restore archive and has
nothing to do with the Win Me operating system. Noel Paton and myself
both suggest the use of the name OLDREST, you could equally well have
created a folder called
THIS_USED_TO_BE_MY_RESTORE_FOLDER_UNTIL_I_RENAMED_IT. Whatever the name
you used Noel and my instructions then say to delete the folder once the
user has booted back in to Win Me. This you have now done. It won't
return unless you decide to create another folder with that name.

The _Restore folder is hidden - so that prying eyes don't fiddle! <g>
Generally, there is absolutely no need to view the contents, so it's best to
leave it that way.
The OLDREST folder no longer exists - you deleted it, remember!
