Meb,,

I keep forgetting to tell you about my system; especially as you have
often mentioned the slowing-down of systems in certain situations.

System::

Win98SE
AMD Athlon
CPU - 1.33G
512 RAM
NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X

I know by todays standards this is probably lame, but I know two other
ppl with computers, both running XP and both with Processors around 2.4
- 2.6, and mine is still twice as fast as theirs. One has 512Ram and
the other 1Gig Ram; but if we were at the starting post of a race, mine
would always come in first.

Newer isnt always better.

Go to My Computer -> Dial-Up Networking. R-click your ISP's icon,
select Properties -> General -> Configure -> Connection -> Advanced.

Click View Log to see the modemlog of your last dialup session.

The tail end of the log will give you the reason for the
disconnection.

If the disconnection is not due to an orderly hangup, then modem
diagnostics may reveal the cause.

Let us know if this is the case.

If the disconnection is due to an InactivityTimeout, then this value
is stored in the S-register S30. The value of S30 will be displayed in
an initialisation string in the modemlog.

You may also see it at this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\0000\Settings\Init

.... or this one:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\0000\Init

The filespec of the modemlog file is stored in the LoggingPath
variable at this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem\0000

Hello Franc,

I have done all you said and it goes like this::

1)The modem log as it stands is only relating to This session as I type.

2)The registry Hives are all as you said, except one is under '0001' as
opposed to '0000'.

3)None of the above information computes with me, I dont know what I am
looking for etc.

4)One of them even shows a 'string' I put in which allows me to get
44,000bps, which is very fast considering dial-up and also in comparison
to others who live up here and also have dial-up.

I have taken screen shots of all of them in jpg format, may I send them
to you via email for your perusal? (also the modem log.)or even post
them to anywhere you say?

You can tick the "append to log" checkbox to capture all your
sessions.

If you email them to me, I'll post the data on my web space for others
to look at.

Your modemlog and registry both have the following init strings:

AT&FE0V1&D2&C1S0=0S95=45<cr>
ATS7=60S30=255L0M1\N3%C3&K3B0N1X4<cr>
AT+ms=12,,,44000 s202=128<cr>

The last line is what appears in the Extra Settings box.

S30=255 creates an idle timeout limit of 2550 seconds, ie 42.5
minutes.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hayes_command_set

If you want to disable it (S30=0), you can either edit your registry,
or add S30=0 to your Extra Settings, ie ...

AT+MS=12,,,44000 S202=128 S30=0

It appears to me that you have a Rockwell/Conexant modem.

The command, +MS=12,,,44000, limits your top connection speed to
44000bps. I'm assuming this was done for performance reasons. If the
modem were not restricted in this way, then it may try to connect at a
higher, more error-prone speed, in which case the data throughput may
be lower than at 44000bps.

The meaning of S-register S202 is described here:
http://www.modemsite.com/56K/rockacf.asp

S202=128 enables SREJ (selective reject). "SREJ eliminates
retransmission of correctly received data after an error is detected -
only the data in error is re-transmitted."

This page may help you analyse the reason for your disconnection:
http://www.modemsite.com/56K/modemlog.asp

For example, if the log says that the "Remote modem hung up", then
that would suggest that your ISP may have kicked you off.

If you want to try adding a diagnostic report to your modemlog, try
changing the value of S202 in your Extra Settings from 128 to 144, and
then post the section that looks like this:

BEGINaa14ab14ac14ad14ba47bb44bc48bd44cc242END

If this doesn't work, let me know and we'll retrieve the diagnostic
data some other way.

Here are the files you sent me:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/Modem_data/

As an addition:

The +MS=12 setting also apparently disables or limits retrains... a
typical gamers setting, however line variations may cause issues if your
actual connection rate fluctuates or *is not as high as set* [which is
typical for heavily used phone ISPs - more connected = less available
speed or severe fluctuation], or you have things like excessive line
noise issues... other settings may conflict with these...

from an old link:
http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/ConnectionFAQ/RockwellModemStrings.htm
{I'd use some of the old gamers sites, but they're mostly gone... or
the old modem help is replaced with cable/xDSL stuff}

Still need to check a HJT log for issues... hope it is.
