Hello varun,
As with all that have been assisting, thank you too for the reply.

One of the first things I asked in this thread was "are there any other
places or settings that can be adjusted regarding Idle Time", and nobody
ever mentioned one; I cant find the one you are mentioning? Where is
the LAN connection so I may r/click on it. (win98SE) The only
'properties' button under a 'general tab' that I have found is via C/P-
modems.

Regarding Internet Explorer: I have IE6 SP1 on this computer, and I
have never ever fired it up, not once. (when I set up this computer 5yrs
ago, I copied a version of FireFox from a disc so that I could enter the
net and d/load all things necessary etc.)

Hello Meb,,
Please see post to Franc re: techy stuff.

Could I post HJT in similar manner to what Franc did?

Yesterday, and last night,(sat') modem called me a liar and worked
through both sessions of internet use; mind you, I was bouncing all
over the place so it was sorta having constant use.

Franc's got this modem stuff, just a little addition to what he posted,
and I did look at your stuff...

Pa Bear is here, ask him for some links to the HJT forums {while he's

Yes, it is an extra setting. Two years ago I was having a similar
problem but it was much more intense. I was being booted off of the net
virtually as soon as I logged on.... it went on for months. Optus didnt
help at all until I involved an Ombudsman. Then I was sent Telstra ppl
who checked the outside lines right back to the 'exchange',(which is
only about 5 miles as the crow flies) and they found some sort of break
in the line. They repaired it, but it sure didnt fix the problem. More
time passed and I was fuming, they sent another Telstra techy to check
inside my home, found nothing. Eventually, I had a MOLDS test done via
Townsville, (i think) and they found quite a few errors,(I still have
that log on the HyperTerminal). Long story short, MOLDS gave me about 5
strings and the above was the best and has worked great til now. (not
that I am saying that is where my current fault lies.)
Fwiw, I have even tickled the above string and had the modem choofing
along at 52,000, substituting that for the 44,000, but the modem seems
to work best as it is now.

Okay.

Can do if you feel it might alleviate things, will wait for
conformation. (btw, that is a space between '8' and 'S', yes?

Yes.

Yes.

Okay.

Will set it prior to reboot after this session.

Many thanks Franc, I am now sure it will be sorted soon.
One thing, please know that I wont understand about 50% of techy-talk
jargon re: 'modems $ connections', but am willing

I used to be with Optus on dial-up, also with a Rockwell/Conexant ACF
"hard" modem. My modem used to connect at 48000bps and then almost
immediately fall back to 46667bps. The connection was stable, although
sometimes I'd notice that it would fall back again to 44000bps. You
won't see a record of this behaviour in the modemlog, but you can see
it in HyperTerminal tests or by accessing the modem's post call
diagnostic report. You can tell that the modem has downshifted by
monitoring the throughput using System Monitor (sysmon.exe) when
downloading ZIP files. Sysmon ships with Win98SE.

I have a complete daily record of all my modemlogs, ppplogs, and modem
diagnostic reports (AT&V1, AT&V2, AT#UD) spanning several years. We
can always move this discussion to email if we need to exchange this
sort of information.

No space is necessary, but it looks neater. In any case it appears
that S30 is not the cause of your disconnects.

I have seen one case where a user in the USA was able to prevent
disconnects by disabling SREJ. He was using a USR modem, though.

Just before I switched to ADSL, I hit upon an init string that gave me
consistent connects at 48000bps with throughput to match, and no
fallbacks.

Hello Franc,

Here is most recent::::

I went to the two links, was very interesting reading; was also
impressed to see your name there too.(you truely are da modem guy)

Now, after this mornings session, (of which ran the full 5 hours with no
problems) and after I disconnected,(the icon stays on the T/bar til I
exit the connection even though its not connected.) I then went and
changed the string somewhat as per your instructions.
The change I made was substituting 'S202=128' for 'S202=144'. At this
point I tried to connect, but it wouldnt let me, just gave an error msg
after the modem was about 3/4 of the way through dialing. Next, I went
back to one of the sites regarding the 144 and Bits Settings. I tried
many ways to get the bits to add up to 144 but then noticed that the one
we may have needed was 'S202=16'. (Bit 4) Here is an exerpt from the site::

"Bit 4 (S202=16) turns on an automatic AT&V2 response whenever there is
a CONNECT or DISCONNECT (and thus will appear in Modemlog)."

Is this not what we wanted? I havent tried it yet and am penning this
note instead. Either way, I did try another 3 times with the 144 sting
in place, but it wouldnt connect, so I changed it back to 128 and here I am.

So, you were an Optus person too,, you sure been around some.

Lastly, this problem is now just seeming to be intermittent, (like my
car, some days it chugs and on others it zooooms.) and to tell the
truth, the last 3 or 4 sessions seem to be fine;; I wonder if it was/is
just techies fiddling with things at their end?

Thanks for all Franc....

S/C

oh, let me know if I should try Bit4.

Hello Meb,

Yes, Franc has a grasp on the modem stuff, so perhaps back to my
Fraudload problem.

First, I was looking through my Bookmarks in F/F, and I have a folder
for Forums, seems I have many many many there, inc:: Tom Coyote, AumHa,
MSFN & etc, so it was my fault at not finding an appropiate one.

From what I recall Meb, it is still not best to start removing things
from the registry until I have the HJT looked at.... yes? I will get on
this straight-away and update you as soon as I know something.
(I have never read so much as what I have in the last week & a half, and
mundane chores have gotten behind too, but I will persevere.)

Btw, as of this note, computer is still running fine, makes me wonder if
Spybot caught it before damage could be done.. (hope hope.)

Thanks for all Meb.

Hello Meb,,

I am replying way up here because it relates to HJT log and posting one.

Have just come from AumHa site where I proceeded to fill out the
registration form for access, but, it wont accept my email address?
It says:: "The email address you entered is not allowed to be used", why
is this..... any ideas? Is it because it is a gmail address?
