Post subject: Is it possible to change the registration info of Windows ME?
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsme>general (more info?)

I was recently given my daughter-in-law's old college Compaq Presario 1200
laptop PC. I have been adding memory, a new battery and the like, but would
like to change the registration info to say that it is registered to me
instead of her when it boots up. Is that possible without reinstalling
Windows?
Thanks,
Larry

If you mean the "Registered to:" information visible on System Properties
(right click on My Computer and select properties from the menu), then
yes, this can be easily changed using regedit.

Using Regedit (Start, Run, enter Regedit and then click OK), Navigate in
the left hand pane, clicking the + signs where necessary, to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
Now move the right hand pane and you should see two string values,
"RegisteredOrganisation" and "RegisteredOwner". Select the one you wish
to change and double click, and now enter the text string you wish to have
displayed. Click OK and when finished exit Regedit.

Please note that editing the registry can cause unwanted and unexpected
problems if the wrong keys are edited or deleted so please be very
careful.

That's the one Mike. Thanks so much for the help. I know it isn't a life and
death situation, but it's kind of annoying. :0)
Thanks again,
Larry

Is there any way to change the LEGAL owner
of an old Windows system registered with
MIcrosoft when it's handed on or purchased?

Can a retail version of Windows ME be
legally transferred to a new owner that
buys the system?

Registration with Microsoft was solely for support and Win Me hasn't been
supported for some years so registration is now irrelevant.

Yes. If it is an OEM copy, that is was supplied with a computer system,
then the entire system has to be transferred, not just the operating
system. If however it is a true retail version then the operating system,
CD, etc. can be transferred/sold to another person provided that the
seller removes all copies their system.

CORRECTION
.... provided that the seller removes all copies FROM their system.
