sometime ago my zip and cdrw drive stopped working.. they were both on the
same ide cable. i deduced through trouble shooting that the channel is no
longer working, which is fine. i purchased another cdrw and replaced my cd
rom with it (using the same cables and jumper selections) and my computer
will not recognize it. i put the cd rom back in place, it works fine and is
also seen. so, while i had the cd rom back i loaded the adaptec cdrw
software, i went to dell did some updates, ( i already did microsoft updates
because i reformatted my hard drive), check my bios to make sure ide channels
were on auto then i put the cdrw back and it still is not seen by device
manager.
this is insane.
the doors open and close on it. i put a cd in it and starts to whir so i
know it functions.

I suspect that your secondary IDE controller is in MS-DOS mode. See this
article.
