Post subject: Not sure how to apply this registry tweak
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsnt>registry (more info?)

I know this is an NT registry group but I couldn't find an XP registry
group. If anyone is aware of a better place to post this, please advise.

I run a piece of legacy software called Ecco Pro v 4.01. It's a PIM and it
works really well. even tho it was written for Win98 and has not been
upgraded. It runs fine on WinXP so long as you are an an administrator.
However, it is tricky as a limited rights user. I've found this info, on a
yahoo groups Ecco forum, but it has no additional assistance. Section 1 is
pretty stgrightforward ( think!), I've just set all permissions on all files
through the Security tab, Advanced, selected Users and allowed all
permissions. However, section 2 is a little unclear.

I think I'm ok on the last 3 as these keys already exist. I assume I use
advanced permissions to set the ones listed for Users. However the first
ones got me a bit stumped. These keys don't exist, either as (eg)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ecc or HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ecc (ie with a dot before the
ecc).

Any assistance would be most appreciated. By the way, yes I always back up
the registry and set a system restore point b4 doing any of this stuff.

Thanks heaps,
James.

Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

Try setting up failure auditing on the local machine hive. Run regedt32.exe
then browse to HKLM, then
Edit|Permissions|Advanced|Auditing|Add|"everyone"|OK then check the "Failed"
box on Full Control, Set Value, Create Subkey, Enumerate Subkey, Delete,
Create Link

Then try again logged on as a normal user. Then check the Event log security
for errors.
