Post subject: Wireless Networking Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsme>networking (more info?)
I live in a small communal living facility with 4 people. Some time
ago I setup a wirless AP. One friends however is still connected with
Ethernet cable that is unsightly. So wireless is the way to go.
He has an old IBM Aptiva desktop running Windows ME. I installed for
him a D-Link DWL-G510. That was easy and it connects with the AP.
The problem is ME does not use this to connect to the network. In the
configuration settings the DWL-G510 is listed. I have taken to steps
to remove the LAN and Modem adapters. The modem is removed from the
computer and the integrated LAN disabled in BIOS.
I have configured the DWL-G510 for 'Infrastructure' and configured the
TCP-IP settings as per this document:

What wireless card does the WinME machine have installed ?

Right click my computer -> properties -> device manager
Disable the wired adaptor here. If the wireless adaptor isn't listed
then re-install it. Once installed it should appear in the list next
to the disabled wired adaptor. If it hasn't installed correctly it
might appear in the wrong place in the device list as a pci ethernet
controller. If you see something listed like that then delete it and
reboot. On restart you should be asked for the driver disk which came
with the network card.

As I said it is a D-Link DWL-G510 PCI card that according to the
manufacturers is compatible with Windows ME.

I did that and completely removed the Ethernet adapter drivers etc. The
wireless loaded OK and was visible in the Network set-up and no other
adapter. I also removed the modem just in case. On the surface all
looked well. However the results were as reported.

That's very strange.
Please post the ipconfig statistics and the routing table. Perhaps
that might shed some light.
