Post subject: Windows Explorer suddenly doesn't open at startup
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win98>gen_discussion (more info?)

As far back as I can remember, if I had an Explorer window opened at
shutdown, the same window would open automatically at the next startup.
Suddenly, in the last couple of days, this is no longer happening. I didn't
make any changes to my system, much less any that could reasonably account
for this.

In TweakUI/Explorer, I do have "Save Explorer window settings" checked.
(What register setting does this correspond to?)

This is more something I'm used to than something I need, but it shouldn't
spontaneously stop working.

Any ideas?

stephen9876, please allow me to jump in here. On new installations of
Win98 I have also seen the Explorer return after a reboot, then
suddenly stops doing that. There seemed to be no observable ill
effect.

I followed PCR's advice:

Start/regedit/
go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies
\Explorer

...and this is what appeared there:

icon Name Data
red ab (Default) (value not set)
blue dots NoDriveTypeAutoRun 95 00 00 00

that's all that's in the registry.

My system does NOT have Windows Explorer return after a START/Shut
Down.. sequence. I do not know what was here, when it used to
reappear.

Also, I don't know what the icons are, but included them in case they
mean something to PCR.

Save Settings On Exit Option Enabled by Default
....Quote.............
Setting the NoSaveSettings field to 1 prevents your settings from being
saved. When you set this value, the following items are not saved when
you exit Windows:

Changed icon positions on the desktop.
Windows that are open when you exit.
The size and position of the taskbar.
....End quote.......

I'm not sure the article speaks truly about icon positions.
Nevertheless...

(1) You want to ensure NoSaveSettings is set to zero or is absent from
the Registry key...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Exp
lorer

(2) I also believe it has been discovered by members of this NG that you
must shut down or reboot properly using the START button. If you use one
of those shortcuts others have posted here, those settings will not be
saved.

I checked my Registry, and NoSaveSettings is set to 0.

I have been using Start/Shut Down. I'm accustomed to the settings not being
ssaved when the system crashes.

That is true. A crash also will prevent them from getting saved. I've
seen that. And I think a boot to safe mode also prevents it, until you
re-open the folder in normal mode.

Well, I've seen some in this suggest removing a Registry key when
setting it to zero seems to have no effect. Maybe try that. Could be
certain forms of zero register as a one. That key, NoSaveSettings, some
say is a DWORD & others say it's BINARY. Removing it altogether might be
best for your purposes since you want a zero.

I did try removing that key entirely, and it didn't make any difference.

I also tried restoring the registry backup from Wednesday morning (8/5), the
oldest one I had, and that didn't help either. Which could mean that the
problem started before then (I can't say for sure one way or the other), or
it has nothing to do with the registry.

That was pretty much all I had, but I'm still trying to think. Which
folder are you trying to have open? Can you think of something else
you've done recently with TweakUI that could have a bearing on this? I
have 3 folders that come up each time I boot, & they sit in the Taskbar.
Try these...

(1) "START, Documents, My Documents"
(2) "START, Run, TEMP"
(3) "R-CLK Desktop, New, Folder".
Name & click the new folder so that it opens.

Those 3 for sure should work. Those are the ones I've got!

That's OK. Nothing in your key prevents a folder to open itself at boot.
I hope you are not using a shortcut to shut down/reboot. You must use
the START button for settings to be saved. I've got...

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Ex
plorer]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=hex:9d,00,00,00
"CDRAutoRun"=hex:00,00,00,00

9d is a tad safer than 95 for NoDriveTypeAutoRun. 9d won't autorun a
file on a hard drive. I presume we are the same for CDRAutoRun. A
deleted one is likely getting read as zero.

Try the folders I've posted to Stephen. What do you have Explorer open
to?

Those are the same icons that show in mine.
