Yes, although in many cases the first command before installing the new
operating system will be to FORMAT your hard drive. As to which of many
possible operating systems you choose to install dispends upon both the
capabilities of your hardware and your own preferences. If however you are
looking for a FREE upgrade that can be downloaded I would suggest you start
by looking at the various Linux based offerings available such as Ubuntu.

If by compatible you mean another Windows operating system then it is
possible that XP might run on your PC (details required) although you may
have difficulty in finding a legal copy for purchase as Microsoft now only
offers Vista in its various flavours and later this year, Windows 7.
Running Vista on Win Me era hardware however is at best problematic.

(Surplus) OEM copies are now probably the only source since Microsoft has
"officially" stopped selling XP which has now moved into the "extended
support" phase - that is no free support or new patches other than those for
security.

I also have an old ME system which I was wondering if I could "upgrade" to
XP? My husband's business data is on that system, and the new sofware
upgrades he received are not compatible with ME. IS IT POSSIBLE TO UPGRADE
ME TO XP? I've contacted that website you noted for a possible "legal" copy
of XP. Any info you might offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you so very much.

Win Me can be upgraded to XP, both Home & Pro although it is advisable to
first run the XP Upgrade Advisor to check what applications may first have
to be uninstalled and then either reinstalled or even replaced following the
upgrade.

The XP Upgrade Advisor (UpgAdv.exe) can be downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/upgrade-advisor.aspx but
note that this is a around 32MB is size. The advisor will give you a clue
as to any XP drivers required that aren't on the XP CD and programs for
which you will have to obtain updates. Some applications will have to be
uninstalled prior to upgrading after which they can often be reinstalled
although in some cases the application will first have to be upgraded to an
XP compatible version. The Upgrade Advisor is also included on the XP CD.

For a more extensive discussion of upgrading see Gary Woodruff's article at
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpupgrad.htm

I trust the data is backed up. If not, back it up regularly and
definitely before upgrading to XP. Back up is a computer user's best
friend. What are the stats of the machine?
