| MEB,
| On the Firefox Proxy settings, do I need to leave
| No Proxy for: localhost, 127.0.0.1?
| [IMG]http://i33.tinypic.com/2cwkf1c.jpg[/IMG]
Mine contains sites that will not allow proxy or are SSL
live.com,msn.com,hotmail.com
{Microsoft doesn't like FireFox} if you don't have Live or hotmail then
leave it blank or add what is needed.
You MAY want to add your local network - something like 192.168.1.0/{port#}
but do so only if needed.
AVAST! already has a localhost *allow* in its settings. Once the proxy is
called AVAST! settings take over.

| I got NoScript installed on Firefox. I had it installed on my laptop, but
| disabled it because it popped up constantly. Maybe I should revisit that
| decision.
Take would be a good idea.
Recently sites have been exposed for using "clickjacking" on their sites,
in addition to other aspects which NOSCRIPT monitors.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=1972&tag=nl.e539 - clickjacking
*IF* you find a site which you will ALWAYS trust [and make SURE these are
ONLY trusted sites - not gaming sites unless you have check them yourself,
yeah takes some research by you, try Google and elsewhere for warnings
concerning a site], then right click the circled S [lower right corner] when
on the site and click always allow.
*IF* you contact a site and need to temporarily allow scripts, right click
the circled S and click temporarily allow.
*IF* you access a site and KNOW ITS BAD then right click the circled S and
click always disallow.
As you can see, the ability to allow or disallow PER EACH SITE makes this a
great security tool, as part of your layered security setup.
MOREOVER, since the kids will be using this computer its best to disallow
their ability to mess up your network.
Here's another suggestion:
Once you get the OS updated and everything setup [before the kids mess it
up], image/backup the disk [used sectors] to one of the other networked
computers. This will allow you to re-install a clean system when the kids
inevitably mess up the original one. Its SOOOOOOO much easier, and the kids
will never get yelled at [you probably wouldn't do that anyway <grin>]
|
| My Internet Explorer is Version 5.00.2614.3500. Perhaps that is why the
| Microsoft Updates didn't work? I found on the General Forum a link to
IE6.
| It says it is compatible with Win 98 so is that the version I should
| download? After I get a compatible Internet Explorer, I'll try again on
the
| Microsoft Updates.
Though you can use that version, IE6/OE6 does include additional system
fixes and does seem to allow more users to access windowsupdate.
Note though, if you use tweakui, IE6 will break your ability to remove
shortcut arrows on Shortcuts. If you never installed tweakui then don't
worry about it.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1e1550cb-5e5d...f5-b02b -
IE
Also Note: Though you will have the last version of IE for 98SE, it has
received numerous CRITICAL updates after end of support for 98. Recently
found vulnerabilities would make it a bad choice to allow or use on the
Internet. After updating it and the OS, block its access to the Internet in
your firewall.
|
| What does mdgx.com/hosts.htm do? You referred to it as a HOSTS file.
The HOSTS file is used whenever a network connection is made or web site is
contacted. It contains allowed and disallowed entries by site/address which
helps to keep you [and particularly the kids] from accessing those known bad
sites, or those sites using links to force malicious site activities,
advertising, and other into your computer/network.
When the site is blocked or an element within the site [except cookies
which you will not see blocked] you will see a warning that particular page
or element could not be displayed [a red X or other indications]. You should
also note that some web pages will not display correctly because they use
CSS or other aspects [like scripts] from know third parties who have been
determined as malicious, use tracking techniques, or inject other potential
issues into their web pages which might harm or damage your computer and
network.
IF you find one of your trusted sites blocked, search for its entry in
HOSTS. If its there and you are SURE its safe then comment out its entry.
|
| Do I need all 3 Avast providers? Web Shield, Standard Shield and Internet
| Mail are the ones I have active.
I would suggest leaving them active, though some claim the Internet Mail
can be disabled. I disagree since it uses its other data bases to check
against for potential malicious activities, not just looking for normal
email inclusions..
I would NEVER leave a computer that children use unprotected.
|
| In my Add/Remove Programs I show Adobe Flash Player ActiveX, but not Flash
9
| or Sun Java. So I'll find those and get them downloaded as well.
Your welcome, we should be done if you've looked at all the pages/links
I've supplied and made the updates, installations, and changes.
As the networking issues are finished, if you need more help please post
over in:
