My MS Encarta Encyclopedia appears to make sound & video exclusively
with .avi files. Certainly there is no .cda file anywhere on it. My
store-bought CD's have only .cda files on them. As MEB said, check that
WMP has command of the .cda filetype. It is listed as "Music CD
Playback" at...
"WMP, Tools menu, Options, File Types tab"
....This should cause WMP to open when you click a .cda file. Click the
HELP button while at that screen for more.
Also, pursuant to Richards's tack...
"WMP, Tools menu, Options, File Types tab"
....Highlight the CD-ROM drive & click Properties. I am set for Digital
there for both Playback & Copy. The Use Error Correction boxes are
unchecked. Click the HELP button there for more info.
Finally...
(a) "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab"
(b) Open the CD-ROM Branch, highlight the CD-ROM drive
& click Properties.
(c) At the Setting tab, ensure "Auto insert notification" is checked.
This should ensure your CD Player will load & begin to play
when a CD is inserted into the CD-ROM.

PCR hit a few more suggestions, however, we should, in addition, go
through some of the normal diagnostics routine.
Is this a recent install?
Is it fully updated, if so, officially or unofficially?
Did you recently uninstall some CD/DVD recording, CD/DVD player, or
other related software?
Did you set tweakui to not play CDs and music [paranoia settings IIRC]?
Are policies setup on the system?
In *Safe Mode* what do you show for installed codex under Sound?
Did you check the file associations?
Are there any other errors, or recent errors or issues involved?
did you check the sound cable from the sound card to the drive?

Have you checked your mixer settings? Make sure that nothing is muted.
It's not so odd that other music plays because CDs use a completely
different technology to wav or whatever, but at least it confirms that the
speakers are working and the sound card is probably OK. Note that the CD
player should work in analogue mode regardless, and will only work in
digital mode if wired correctly. If it was previously digital and it used
to work, that suggests that the wiring for digital is OK (unless it's fallen
off - can happen).

Many thanks to all for your good suggestions and keen insights. I followed
up on all of them. The peculiar (to me) solution was to install some old
software that included a CD playing application. That alone works. My Win
Media Player is out of date; if version 11, or later if there is one,
comports with Win 98, that too may be a solution.
Good wishes to all.

After taking it, go to Windows Update for any updates that may yet be
offered.

Thanks, PCR, will do an update try. In my present WMP 9, if *.cda is an
option, it is obscured by the long line of possible formats extending beyond
the non-moveable frame of the "file types" window. There is one item that
gives a horizontal list of many types. This adventure is still mysterious
to me.

You are welcome. That doesn't sound right. At...
"WMP, Tools menu, Options, File Types tab"
....the requestor shows 11 file types. That's just enough to fit in the
window; therefore, the scroll bar at right doesn't function. However,
everything in there has just one file type attached to it... .asf, .wma,
..wmv, .cda (shows up at bottom when "Music CD Playback is highlighted),
..avi, .wav, .mpeg, .mp3, .midi, .aiff, & .au. None of them obscure
anything.
Something has gone bad with your install, looks like. Maybe it's tried
to gram file types it shouldn't have. Therefore, secure a new download.
Then, look in...
"Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab"
.... to uninstall your current WMP. Mine is listed...
"Windows Media Player system update (9 Series)".
After that, do the new install. Keep us informed.
To correct an earlier error, I meant to speak of the Devices tab for the
CD-ROM Properties, not the File Types as I wrote.

AFAIK .cda should not be a file type for WMP. WMP won't examine the file
type - it will identify the CD as an audio CD and play it as an audio CD.
The file type is only relevant if you rip the contents, but the ripping will
convert the file type anyways. The .cda file is only a form of index or
reference file to the actual contents of the CD, which aren't any file type
that Windows recognises..
