All other CD's play, including those such as encyclopedias with musical
segments, and installation CD's. WinMedia Player, Winamp, Jet audio - all
are either mute or show msg. "unknownproblem" (WMP). Any suggestions much
appreciated.

What is the file extension/format ... is it MP3 or MP4 perhaps?

-Not MP3 0r 4, MEB. The Open thing shows no files of any type until I make
it show "all files". Then I select, then nothing.
The CD's I've tried on 98 are: a burnt miscellany, and an ordinary
commercial collection.

Okay, but is it *.cda [Compact Disc Digital Audio]? Or a with a "music"
indication?
The "store bought" should be *.cda, your burnt CD may be anything you
chose for the burning format process.
Check the actual format, and then check [or create if necessary] the
file type association to whatever player for the format [if
supported]... you may have either a conflict, no assigned player, or a
codex [potentially corrupted] issue (if using a standard format).

What procedure are you using to play these CDs in WMP?
Have you checked the problem CDs in a CD Player? If they work OK there,
then try playing them using the CD drive front panel Play button, and
headphones in the CD drive headphone socket. If they work OK there, then
your drive might be configured with digital audio, in which case the digital
connection to the sound card, or the sound card configuration for digital
audio input, is wrong. Otherwise it's likely a WMP problem - try some other
audio CD player.

| Might want to brush up on some CD/CDR info:

| Uhm, are you using tweakui?

The burnt files are *cda, MEB. The retail one, a BMC Direct freebie, is also
..cda.I have tweakui for Win XP. Thanks for the links. In Control Panel ->
multipedia, the setting was digital; I changed it to analog. Neither setting
effected sound.

The disks play in my main box, Win XP, Jeff. I changed the setting in
Control Panel, Multipedia, from digital to analog. I've tried Winamp and Jet
Audio. I've changed the drive to a backup CD Player. Mystifying that musical
sounds are produced from an encyclopedia and not music discs. Thanks for
your post.

Might be worth confirming that the CD Player volume slider isn't set to
minimum or muted in the 'Master Volume' control settings. (Right-click the
loudspeaker icon in the system tray and select 'Open Volume Control') It
*may* override other application control-settings.
