Okay, I have an older model Gateway Pentium II 400 Mhz that I'm trying to
clean up and send to a friend of mine. It currently has Win 98 Second
Edition on it, and the computer works fine over all. Now, the computer is
working fine, except for the fact that plug and play items do not work on it.
It is essential that I get this computer as idiot proofed as possible, as
I'm not really confident in the friend's ability to get it working. What
exactly is the best bet here? Update to 2000 or ME? Is there a way to unlock
Plug and play options from 98SE? Thanks.

Try running setup using the /p i switch at setup. This switch tells Setup
not to report the existence of a Plug and Play BIOS.

See this article:
