I'm running Win95a on an old Gateway. The secondary 13.6 GB WD hard
drive has 2GB partitions (D, E, F, G, H, I, J). Lately, when I tried
to make a new folder in drive D, it said "Error renaming file...Make
sure the disk is not full or write-protected..." Right-clicking on
the drive in My Computer shows 139MB of free space available. When
I moved some folders out of this partition to another partition, there
is no problem naming new folders. The other partitions work perfectly.

What would cause the partition to be full when there's 139MB remaining?

I ran GW Scan on the drive, and it checks out okay.

Thanks!

On FAT16 file system you cannot have more than 512 files or folders in
the root directory. Using long filenames can reduce the number of root
entries available.

John,

Are you talking about 512 files or folders in each 2GB partition...or the
whole 13.6GB hard drive?

On each partition, you cannot have more than 512 directory entries on
the root. Long filenames can greatly reduce the amount of entries
available. The maximum number of entries on the volume is limited to
65,536 entries.

John,

I think you're right on the money. I checked, and one of my folders has over
5,800 files in it. And, yes, there are plenty of long filenames.

Thanks again!

On the root there can only be 512 entries but in the folders themselves
you can have as many files and sub-folders as you wish providing that
you don't exceed the volume maximum of 65,536 entries.
