Post subject: Partition Magic 8 for Windows Server on Mirrored Volume!!! Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win2000>file_system, others (more info?)
Hi! All,
I have Windows Server 2003 R2 installed on a 300 gb HDD which has been
mirrored.
The server has 2 partitions C Drive is 50gb and D drive is 250 gb. Now I am
running out of disk space on theC drive and would like to use the partition
magic to shrink D Drive and extend the C Drive.
I would like to know if this is possible using partition magic.
I hope it will not cause any problems to the RAID?

Hello Harry,
With a C drive of 50GB for 2003 R2 you should normally have enough space
for OS. What have you installed on the server that it's not enough? Operations
like this can always bring problems. So make sure you have an actual tested
backup from the server.

Hi! Meinolf,
Thank you for the reply. Correction here - I have given C drive 20gb of
space. I have a few applications installed on the C drive. So now I am left
with 5 gb of space.
Thats the reason I would like to extend it.
I checked with Norton Partition Magic website - they say Partition Magic 8
doesnt support Win 2003 .
So I have to look for other softwares or methods to assist me.
Do you guys have any way to perform this operation without using any 3rd
party tools??
Thank you
Regards
Hari

You'd need ServerMagic - but I don't know if that's still made. Check out
Acronis Disk Director.

you could do a full backup of your data partition to an external medium.
Delete the partition.
Boot from a Vista or Server 2008 DVD.
In system repair options open the command prompt.
Use diskpart to extend the disk (dont forget to add the size parameter as
described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325590).
The DVD boot is necessary, because the Windows Server 2003 version of
diskpart does not allow to extend the system partition.
Recreate the data partition and restore the files.
Best greetings from Germany

Partition magic doesn't support server 2003 indeed, but you may try its alternative, it supports 32/64bit server and RAID perfectly. You need not to do so much complex works, but backup your server before any operation is a good habit.
With this SW, you can shrink other partition and enlarge the system partition without reboot, it is very useful for a server to avoid downtime.
