There is no application from MSFT named simply, "Live Mail". There is an
application named, "Windows Live Mail", and it currently exists in two
version:
A regular release, 12.0.1606
A beta release, 14.0.2057
Yes, the new beta is newer than the old release. Please, please,
please...Microsoft already has given us a plethora of confusing names, so
please don't use unofficial, ad hoc abbreviations. That only adds to the
confusion.

The possibility exists that user permissions for access to the MS Outlook
Express message store are screwed up. Probably depends upon the other piece
of information which is missing from your post: OS version. Windows XP Home
Edition, or Windows XP Pro? SP2, SP3, or earlier? I am reasonably sure it
isn't Windows Vista, because you stated it is MS Outlook Express. But who
knows? You got the first part wrong ("Live Mail"), and others have confused
the Windows XP email client (MS Outlook Express) with the Windows Vista
email client (Windows Mail).
I'd strongly urge you to start from scratch. Locate your System Properties
(Windows+Break keys), and report that. Mine is:
Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
Locate your email client version. If it is truly Windows Live Mail, you may
have to tap the Alt key to reveal the hidden toolbar menus. Help | About.
Mine is:
Windows Live Mail
Version 2008 (Build 12.0.1606)
Since you apparently can't open MS Outlook Express, we will have to judge by
your operating system. MS Outlook Express only runs under Windows XP; if you
have Windows Vista, you don't have MSOE. Windows Mail is all that comes with
Windows Vista.
Help us to help you. Gather all that information and post back. Oh, and I
have cross posted this to the Windows Live Mail newsgroup, just in case that
is the program you meant by, "Live Mail".
Because you are using a browser for access (which I find a clunky way to
read NNTP groups), here is the link:

Norman,
The beta is 14.0.5027, not .2057.
I know what you meant to say, but I would remove only from this line: MS
Outlook Express only runs under Windows XP; if you have Windows Vista, you
don't have MSOE.
Outlook Express runs on systems as old as Windows 98.

Why starting WLMail invokes OE at all is a mystery to me but...
You'll find support for Windows Live Mail (WLM) in this public newsgroup:
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop

Here's my system properties
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 3
I also get the error message
"Outlook express could not be started. The application was unable to
initialize the store directory. Your computer may be out of memory or your
disk is full. Contact Microsoft support for further assistance. (0x80004005)"
I am using Windows live mail and get this error message every time I open
Windows live mail. Any idea's on how to rid myself of this error message?
TIA

Windows Live Mail (WLM) should not be trying to open Outlook Express
(OE).
Were you previously using OE?
Possibly some software that you previously used with OE is being
triggered by WLM and trigger OE. This might be anti-virus software set
to scan e-mail, anti-spam software, or some connection manager software.
The letter is provided by some ISPs and can automatically launch
specified applications when an Internet connection is established.
As long as your anti-virus software is set to scan files as they are
opened, scanning e-mail as it downloads or sends is unnecessary and
prone to problems.
With some anti-virus (and anti-spam) programs, simply disabling the
e-mail scanning function doesn't really disable it. It simply tells the
program not to flag any messages. It still processes all the messages
and may still cause send/receive failures. What you may need to do is
uninstall the anti-virus program, then reinstall it using a custom
install option and unselect the e-mail scanning component for
installation.
