I have several Outlook Express 6.0 clients at work that cannot receive
attachments from me. I am using Outlook 2003. If I send attachments to anyone
using Outlook 2003, they rec'v them. Others using Outlook 2003 can send to
these Outlook Express users and the attachments are received. What's
different with my Outlook or with the Outlook Express clients? Any ideas?

If you are using Outlooks RTF, (Rich Text Format), Outlook Express doesn't
understand it. Try sending in Plain Text.

If messages are sent using the Exchange family of mail programs
(includes Windows Messaging or Outlook97/98/2000+) and the option to use
Rich Text Format is selected, it puts the RTF message (and any attached
files) in an attachment called WINMAIL.DAT (application/ms-tnef). But
this attachment is useless to most other mail programs. In some mail
programs (e.g. Outlook Express), the attachment won't even be visible.
The Exchange user can turn off the RTF option for messages to selected
recipients. Note that if sending via an Exchange server, the Exchange
server administrator may be overriding the mail client settings. In
this case, the administrator will need to make changes on the server.
In some cases, the Exchange server actually removes the attachments to
some recipients.

The setting that you want to change is at Tools, Accounts, Mail,
Properties, Advanced. Uncheck the Break Apart option.

Using plain text in Outlook 2003 solved the problem, though I don't
understand why I could send myself an attachment from Outlook 2003 in RTF,
open it in Outlook Express 6.0 and the attachment is there, not stripped out.
Yet that is the case sending to another user who has Outlook Express 6.0 but
not Outlook 2003. In any case, using plain text to send to another user
solved the problem!
Are there any issues with sending attachments from Outlook using HTML mail
format instead of RTF?

I /believe/ HTML will work, but you would have to test it. I have never used
Outlook so I am relying on just what I have seen here.

There is information there on why some OE recipients might get the
attachment OK and others not. It depends on your contacts settings and
the Exchange server settings.
