A couple of brief questions should already know answers but I have
been busy in other areas. Is office 97 compatible with XP and
Vista and is office XP compatible with Vista. If I buy a new PC do
I have a real copy of the OS so that if I have a disk failure I
cant configure a new disk et et.
Thanks

I've been running Office '97 for years on Windows XP. Works as well as
it always has.

I've never had Office XP or Windows Vista though.

Just make sure you Microsoft Office license(s) isn't/aren't OEM ones
that can't be transfered to a new computer. It was common for OEM Office
licenses to be included with computers for a while. The Office suite is
NOT part of the OS.

The provisions for recovery from a corrupted OS reinstallation vary
widely by computer manufacturer and sometimes even by units made by the
same manufacturer. They range from a recovery partition on the hard
drive, quite useless if there's a hardware failure of the drive, to
generic optical media that does little more DRM wise than prompt the
user to connect to a Microsoft server for activation. You need to
clarify the form of the recovery option with the retailer.
