When trying to open any attachment I get an "Outlook Express has encountered
a problem and needs to close" box up. Clicking "more information" gives the
following error signature "AppName: msimn.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.5508
ModName: officeav.dll ModVer: 15.5.0.23 Offset: 000055e1"
When I re open OE6 and then try to open the attachment it works fine until I
try to open an attachment withing the next email
I am running Win XP SP3 and OE6.00.2900.5508(xpsp 080320-1622)
This problem has only started in the last week. It is now getting a pain in
the rear.
I have and regularly do clear out all Tempory file folders, but this does
not make a difference.

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)?
Is or was Norton AntiVirus (NAV) ever installed? [officeav.dll is
associated with (older versions of) NAV.]

The error is occurring in Norton Anti-virus Office plug-in. So
presumably, the problem is occurring with an Office attachment.

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:
<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
</QP>

If that doesn't resolve the problem, contact Symantec Support for assistance
(assuming your NIS 2007 subscription is current).
