Post subject: getting OE back as my default email Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>inetexplorer>ie6_outlookexpress (more info?)
When I try to run OE from IE 7, I get the error message:
"Windows can't access the device ,file, or path. You may not have the
appropriate permissions to acces them."
I tried the suggestions in this forum and nothing works. I did notice that
the "URL internet shortcut" extension in File Types is missing anything that
relates to OE.
I tried the OE fix that was posted in the forums and that didn't work. I do
notice that the make IE the default browser is grayed out.
I am using Zone Alarm Pro as my firewall and AVG 8.x as my AV program along
with SpyWare Doctor 6.x
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Are you running WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3?
Is or was Windows Live Mail installed?
Was AVG 8, ZA Pro, and/or Spyware Doctor running in the background when you
installed IE7 or WinXP SP3 (if installed)?
Microsoft Outlook updates change the default mail handler to Microsoft
Outlook

In IE7
Tools/Internet Options/Programs/Email [set it to Outlook Express]
Apply, OK
Close IE7, re-open and test the email icon/link again.

Dear Sir,
I have SP2, not SP3 as I somehow got a "boot loop" when I did. I could try
shutting off AVG, ZAP and SWD to see if these are the culprit. ZAP is set to
allow OE to work.
I did create a new file type that pointed to OE, but that didn't work. I can
open OE from the desk top icon, but not from inside IE 7. I also saw in the
registry that there were 2 identies, one with my email id and the other
without.
I could try installing SP3 to see if that would fix the problem, but I don't
want to go through the "boot loop" issue again as I had to reformat the
drives and reinstall everything again.
I have AT&T Yahoo as my ISP and I think that when I used the mail button, it
set the mail client to Yahoo and not OE.
Thank you for your time. I hope that i have added additional information you
need to help me with this problem.

I'll also ask if MS Outlook is installed?

Did you try the numbered steps I posted?

Is another browser installed?

Please don't do that yet.

I did NOT suggest doing any such thing! I only asked if any of them were
running in the background when you installed IE7 and/or attempted to install
WinXP SP3.
