I have two systems sitting in the same set of shelves: a Win95 (IBM Aptiva)
and a WinXP Home SP2 (Dell I1100).
I would like to connect them at least for file transfers and also, if
possible, to share DSL internet access. I can't find a router that will
accommodate the Win95. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Bud, every home broadband router that I've seen works with Windows 95,
even if it isn't listed on the box. What have you seen that indicates
otherwise? Any particular router makes and models?
Connect both computers to LAN ports on the router. Run the Network
Setup Wizard (in Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications)
on the WinXP computer. If the Wizard finds the router's shared
Internet connection, tell it to use that. If it doesn't, tell it that
the computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway.
XP's Network Setup Wizard won't run on Windows 95, so configure the
Windows 95 network settings manually. Go to Control Panel | Network
and:
1. Add these network components if they aren't already present:
TCP/IP protocol
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
2. Remove these network components if they're present:
IPX/SPX protocol
NetBEUI protocol
Client for NetWare networks
3. Set the workgroup name to the same name as the Windows XP computer
uses (default for XP is MSHOME).

I have W95(os2.1) ethernetted to a Linksys WIFI modem router. The
router is connected to XP via wireless.
You need a partition formatted FAT 32 on XP to share files I believe.
Of course a ethernet card is needed in the W95 PC, I have a cheap
3Com card installed.

It should not make any difference as to what the file system being used on
XP may be.
File sharing should work with NTFS or FAT32 and on the win95 machine either
FAT or FAT32

Gentlemen, thank you for your support.
After almost 50 years of programming, I can make mainframes jump through
hoops, but PC communication, partitions, protocols, networks, and
God-knows-what-all completely baffles me!
Jon and Norm, the only thing I understand about FAT is the stuff around my
belly. Between the two of you, though, it sounds as though I'm okay to
proceed.
Steve, I'm glad you responded. I have a printout of a reply you made on
1/18/06 to a similar question. That reply continued from what you said here
with "If there's a DHCP server on your network (broadband router,..." and
then proceeded to tell how to assign static IP addresses if there isn't. At
that time, I didn't really have a network -- just two separate systems, so
all the stuff about IP addresses served only to shake me up.
I did purchase a router -- a Linkysys Wireless-G Broadband router Model
WRT54GS -- because I was expecting a new roommate to piggyback my DSL, but
she was a no-show. A recent closer look at the box revealed under Minimum
Requirements "Windows 2000 or XP", which caused my concern. In wandering
around the Internet, I found comparable minimum requirements. You do give
me hope, however, so I'm going to go for it. Don't be surprised if I yell
for help here again. Of course, if all goes well, I'll let you know.

Thanks for the additional information, Bud. I looked up the WRT54GS
on the Linksys web site. It should work fine with a wired connection
to your Windows 95 computer. I don't know of any wireless network
adapter that works with Windows 95. You might have to do the initial
setup of the router from the Windows XP computer.
You don't need static IP addresses. By default, Windows 95 will
obtain an IP address automatically from the router's DHCP server over
a wired connection.

Steve, pardon me for the delay in continuing this saga, but I switched ISP's
(from ATT to MSN), and ran into some problems trying to use my old ATT
modem. I am now using an Actiontec 54 Mbps Wireless DSL Gateway model
GT704-WG. This unit combines the router and modem in one unit, and they
call it a "Wireless DSL Starter Kit." (!) It was all part of a promotion
by Qwest to bundle services and save me several bucks a month. I have no
immediate intention to use the wireless feature, and no installation steps
for wireless were performed, per their instructions. They said to wait
until I actually have hardware for wireless usage.
The Win95 system used to have a dial-up Internet connection with ATT, but I
can't use it any more, and I don't need it. Although I would like to
connect it to my DSL setup, they tell me I can't install the unit on a
Win95. All I need to do is copy files from Win95 to WinXP so that I can
burn them to CD's. I know I could use a crossover ethernet cable to do
this, but that implies swapping plugs all the time on the WinXP -- not
clean.
I followed your instructions for Win95 and WinXP, and everything proceeded
without a hitch. I established file/drive sharing on the Win95 drives. When
I finally brought up the system though, I expected WinXP Explorer to show
some indication of the Win95 system, but it didn't.
"WinXP Network Connections" showed, among other things:
Internet Gateway: Name: Local Area Connection on Linux IGD Type:
Internet Gateway Status: Connected Device Name: (same as Name).
LAN or High-Speed Internet: Name: Local Area Connection 2 Type: LAN or
High-Speed Internet Status: Connected Device Name: Broadcom 440x
10/100 Integrated Controller #2 (This last rings a bell, and may be the
ethernet
board I installed on the Win95 long ago).
I don't know where "Linux IGD" comes from. It showed up while I was
configuring the Win95.
Under "My Network Places," I tried "View workgroup computers". After a long
delay, it gave me the error message: "Mshome is not accessible. You might
not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator
of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The list of
servers for this workgroup is not currently available."
I hope all this makes more sense to you than it does to me. What's my next
step?

I think that you're almost there, Bud.
The Linux IGD (Internet Gateway Device) is your router. Your router
creates an Internet Gateway icon on the Windows XP computer. You can
monitor and control the router (turn its Internet connection on or
off) by clicking the icon.
Local Area Connection 2 on the XP computer is its Ethernet connection
to the router.
The Windows 95 computer can connect to the router for Internet access
and file sharing. All you should have to do is connect the computer's
Ethernet adapter to a port on the router. It isn't necessary to run
the Qwest setup disk on that computer.
In my experience, network browsing through My Network Places and
Network Neighborhood is unreliable -- so unreliable that I recommend
not using it.
To access the Windows 95 shared folders from Windows XP, click Start >
Run on Windows XP, then type the Windows 95 computer's name in the box
in this format:
\\computer
To access the Windows XP shared folders from Windows 95, click Start >
Run on Windows 95, then type the Windows XP computer's name in the box

If there's a firewall program on either computer, configure it to
allow access by other computers on the local area network.
