Post subject: Missing file setupx.dll
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win95>setup (more info?)

Hello alltogether,

Wonder if someone might be able to help me with this: I was trying to
upgrade a 95b to 98. When starting the 98 cd I received the error
message that it cannot upgrade the system as there is already one
installed (or so...). Did some research on the internet and found out
that there is a missing file calles setupx.dll and in fact- it's not on
my computer under 95b. So I checked my 95b OEM cd but couldn't find it.
Question now: Where can I find the missing file- or: How can I upgrade
without it?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Stephan

Look in Precopy2.cab for setupx.dll

Is the Win98 also an OEM?
If so, then it is probably not meant for an upgrade, rather a clean
install.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for the info.
However the problem still exists and yes the CD is no upgrade but a
plain install CD.
But I thought I could get it going as well.
So I followed the hints about the error message I'm receiving here on
http://www helpwithwindows.com/windows98/srat-01.htm where they
recommend that I rename setupx.dll and setupx.w95 to setupx.old1 and
setupx.old2.
And if there's no setupx.w95 I should copy a new one from the CD into
the system folder.
However under DOS mode both cannot be found and I only sound setupx.dll
in the system folder (now replaced by a new copy).
But where is now the setup.win95 on the CD? Haven't found it though
browsing through all those .zip files there...

Extract it from "precopy2.cab" to a floppy on the computer you are using
now. WinZip can handle cab files.
