RealPlayer v.10.5 plays MP3s under Win98, sounds fine, is free too.

Thank you. I will try the vlc player. I wonder about Sun Java because the
last I read that Sun Java 5 will be supported until October 30, 2009 and yet
the website lists it as its last one for development. I have Sun Java 5 with
Runtime 16 and the website lists Sun Java 5 Runtime 15 as the last one. I
think that needs to be fixed on the website.

Most any Winamp. Personally, I like the old ones; specifically, V2.5c, d or
e.

The older ones are the only one that will work with 98/SE. Not sure how far
back one needs to go but the newer ones require Windows 2000 or later.
