GMail and Hotmail are both web-based.
Though I don't use Hotmail...I have noticed that GMail does seem to take a
lot of resources
and has difficulty loading on a lower end machine.
Possibly using POP3 and an email reader will work better...

I like old computers and old operating systems too.
I've got win95 setup on a 386 and it works fine.
As to downloading movies, If you have a question no harm in asking.
Though I've never downloaded movies...I have downloaded a few Linux distros
and they are quite large.
I've found that a download manager often is a big help.
