On a pc with win98se
After trying to install software for a Zip CD player, I got a few blue
screens
When I open up I get the following message-

While initializing device IOS:
Error: An I/O subsystem driver failed to load
Either a file in the .\iosubsys subdirectory is
corrupt or the system is low on memory

It would not run in safe mode
I ran scandisk

I would like to see what is in/or delete . drive which is system/. but you
cannot get dos to open up a dot folder
Any help to get me back again would be appreciated
David

You can retore the registry from dos and maybe get the system working again.

scanreg /restore

Don't know what you mean by "dot folder"

Dot is DOS-speak for "the current directory" (and double dot for the one
above). Quite why the error message says ".\iosubsys" rather than just
"iosubsys" I don't know.

Thanks for clarifying that...

If the OP cannot read the current directory from dos, the system must be
seriously corrupted

What is a "Zip CD player"? There are Zip drives, and there are CD drives....which
is it?
What software did you install with it? Can you give us the name and model of the
drive you installed?

Whatever software you say you installed may have added a driver to the
\Windows\System\iosubsys folder, and this driver is corrupt or incompatible. You
can try physically removing the drive you installed, but you will likely also have
to remove the driver file involved by determining what driver file was added by the
installation, and re-naming in from DOS.

Was the fault logged in the IOS.LOG file?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/138899/EN-US/

Try enabling a bootlog.txt file and look for the last driver that
fails to load.

Towards the end of their dominance of the (then) large-scale removable
storage market (the ZIP [100 then 250M] and JAZ [1G? I can't remember]
drives), when the cost of blank CDs and even CD-RWs was beginning to
make the cost of iomega media look ridiculous, iomega did "bring out" a
CD drive. (I think they called it ZIP650.) It was presented on the shelf
as part of the range, though used standard CD media; I don't know if it
came with custom iomega software, and/or used the standard CD format
(though I'd be most surprised if it didn't, except perhaps for CD-RW
use).

OP believes that the dot directory will not open because nothing changes
when the dot directory is selected. There is no indication that the system
is compromised other than WRT the incompatible device.
