Post subject: Hard Drive and Memory Limitations of Win98
Archived from groups: alt>win98, others (more info?)

Hi.

It's my understanding that Windows 98 has limitations as to the size
of hard drive that it will recognize. I believe that limit is 120 GB.
Now, does that mean that if I put in a hard drive that is, say, 320
GB, Windows 98 won't accept the drive at all, or just that it will
refuse to see a partition larger than 120 GB?

I've also heard that installing over a certain amount of RAM can make
Windows 98 unstable. Is this true? If so, what is the limit?

The specific version I'm using is Windows 98SE, if that makes a
difference. Even though I'm using an old operating system, my hardware
is fairly new (purchased in 2004), so I don't think the motherboard
will have a problem supporting large drives. If anyone is wondering
why I'd want a hard drive that Win98 can't fully utilize, it's because
I plan on giving the rest of the space over to Linux.

HI igor!

MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF RAM

it has been decided that the maximum amount of ram that windows 98 se can run is 1 gig of ram. or if you have a dual channel motherboard,you can put 512 in each channel for a total of 1gig.

http://aumha.org/win4/a/memmgmt.php

"windows 98 supports eide hard disk as large as 137G." fat 32 supports cluster sizes of 4k and thus up to 8gb partitions.

source windows 98 secrets , PAGE 1000.

i am running windows 98se and i have it partitioned into 4 (22878mb) and 1 (22901mb). everything works fine.

YEP!
all simple fixes!
install windows 98 se, put netscape on, your updates, directx, recommened updates then
just disable fast shutdown in msconfig download the shutdown patch that will fix this.
open the system.ini and
add MaxFileCache=524288 or MaxFileCache=512000 to the [vcache]
add MinPagingFileSize=1044480
and MaxPhysPage=40000
to the [386enh]

besure you are using the proper himem.sys and emm386.exe
they should be on your windows 98 se disk and they should say

size modified
himem.sys 33191 04/23/1999 10:22 pm
emm386.exe 125495 04/23/1999 10:22 pm

if you use an older version of himem.sys, such as the one for 95 then, it can wind up taking up 44k of conventional memory instead of 1k.

your config.sys needs the following lines in this order:
DEVICE=C:WINDOWSHIMEM.SYS/M:1
DEVICE=C:WINDOWSEMM386.EXE noems X=D000-F0FF /V
DOS=HIGH,UMB
FILES=200
BUFFERS=80
STACKS=18,256

note: on the exclusion start with x=A000-F7FF
do not enable disk compression of any kind. no compressed floppies no zip drives. compression loads the dblspace driver which takes up 107k
shutdown problems are fixed by using the following versions:
file name version installed folder where to install
asycfilt.dll 2.40.4515 C:windowssystem
advpack.cll 5.50.4027.300 1981-1999
or
5.50.4134.600 1981-2000
apmbatt.sys 4.10.2223 1981-1999
msconfig.exe 4.10.1998
pci.vxd 4.10.2223
w98info16.dll 4.71.704.0 1994-1995
w95inf32.dll 4.71.0017.0 1991-1995
tshoot98.chm 243kb(240,517bytes) c:windowshelp
configmg.vxd 4.10.2222 1988-1999 c:windowssysbckup
advpack.cll 5.50.4027.300 1981-1999 also in c:windowshellpdesksfc
or
5.50.4134.600 1981-2000

for problems with the going to sleep when the computer is left idle just download and install power management trouble shooter
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q185949
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/191493

windows 98 se does not have enough icon cache so go to
http://aumha.org/regfiles.php#icons
and install their icon reg and the editreg.reg

go to this website http://www.mdgx.com and do a search for the following:

FORCED EXIT
MAX CACHE SPEED
always unload dlls
CACHE WRITE DELAY

ON THIS ONE JUST ADD THE 4000 IN THE REGISTRY keep
the ifsmgr.vxd version 4.10.0.2222 that comes with windows 98 se or go to 4.10.0.2223.

THE WINDOWS 98 SE INSTALL DISK INSTALLS: ifsmgr.vxd version 4.10.0.2222, QUIET
THE 273017usa8 INSTALLS VERSION 4.10.0.2225 WON'T SHUT DOWN, NOISEY
THE 256015usa8 INSTALLS VERSION 4.10.0.2223 SHUTS DOWN, NOT SO NOISEY.
