Hanging on win98 splash screen

I had command Anitivirus which i removed and installed Mcafee version
4. while installing Mcafee i was told to create a emergency disk(for
booting in a virus free environment in case of a outbreak)and
afterwards during completion of the installation i was told to test
the emergency disk by cold booting the machine using the emergency
disk. I did that and while the emergency disk was scanning the system
files I rebooted the machine as i thought that the disk was working
successfully. After that i could not get beyond the splash screen. i
installed win98 3 times but was stuck with the same problem. Googling
led me to ways to fix the registry but since i had installed the OS
three times the registry had no information about the mcafee
installed. Also as OS was installed 3 times the autoexec.bat and
config.sys renaming did not help. I am able to get the command prompt
but cannot move forward. Also i renamed the mcafee folder but even
that did not help. I dont want to format the disk as i did not back up
my data as was just removing an old virus scanner and installing a new
Virus scanner.

Any help would be appreciated.

rather than install windows back into the same folder...
you can opt to install windows into a *different* folder.
you will end up with a fresh install...
but all your data will still be there.
you will of course have to reinstall all your apps and updates.
once all is working ...you can delelte your original windows folder

your original folder is more than likely just C:\windows

the default *new* folder is C:\windows.000<!-- ~MESSAGE_AFTER~ -->
