Well, you "could" do the usual memory tests [memtest86, Microsoft's, or
other], and some other diagnostics on the motherboard and devices.
However, did you at least check for what I suggested?

All right. I misread your answer to glee. Leave your friends computer
out of it, until your own 9x machine is fixed. Go back & answer all of
glee's questions. If you can't boot to Normal Mode, then hold F5 as you
boot to see whether you can get to Safe Mode. Or hold CTRL as you boot
to get to the Startup Menu, & select Safe Mode from that.

Also, I think MEB offered sound advice. Especially...

Joan Archer's way to ensure ZoneAlarm is completely gone.

....& his advice to un/re-install avast!. That can be accessed at
"Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab". Avast! Home
Edition v.4.8.1351 hasn't hurt me, but I do have more RAM than you.

Here are apps to test RAM...

I'm paying that much for NetZero. So far, I continue to resist Verizon's
latest discount for FIOS. They want to give me three things for the
price of two-- but only for two years! I don't know what I'd do, if I
had to give up my floppy drive or my PCTEL Platinum V.90 Modem!

DON'T tell us how you're going to get it! If there's the slightest hint
of illegality, MEB will get after you!

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
Should things get worse after this,
