Post subject: Duplicate Network icon in startup area - how to get rid? Archived from groups: microsoft>public>win2000>setup (more info?)
On my Compaq Deskpro with Windows 2000 SP4 and all updates I have got
2 'network and dial-up' connections icons in the bottom right. The
second appeared after I installed some bluetooth software and a
bluetooth dongle on an internal usb slot (a strange PC Line usb card I
bought which has 4 external usb slots and one inside). When I look at
both after clicking on them, they're identical: Make new connection,
local area connection, local area connection 2 and Vodafone Mobile
Broadband. Lan 2 is a bluetooth thing.
I've looked in the startup programs section using the free registry
cleaner CCleaner, just in case I can just delete one there, but there
is nothing duplicated. I don't suppose it's slowing things down too
much but I would like to get rid of the duplicate if I can. (It hurts
my eyes!)
I know how to get to the startup programs with my other Vista machine
(via Defender > Tools... etc) but not with W2K - I find the start-up
_menu_ programs when I use the help function to enquire, and it's not
that. Is there an equivalent to the Vista thing I haven't yet
discovered? (But I suppose if there were a duplicate other than the
icon I'd have found it in CCleaner....)
Am I going to have to manually edit the registy or something to get
rid of the spare?

I did read the article and try each pertinent suggestion, but I
haven't solved this. I think the problem may be to do with how the
bluetooth software installs. It's Bluesoleil, an oldish version, 2.-
something. Bluesoleil puts the extra notification area icon in there,
but it's contents when clicked on are identical. Maybe the software
was written for XP and not adequately checked for other versions. I
can't recognise another startup entry that might be through
Bluesoleil.
I'm assuming internat.exe is the relevent program for the normal
Windows, but it only appears to be among the startup programs once. I
will look into contacting Bluesoleil's makers about this but I think
I'll probably have to put up with it.
Any further ideas, though, are welcome.

Actually that has to do with multi-lingual feature that puts the language
selection in the system tray.
